Double trouble for Weir in Inglis Cup

Leading Victorian trainer Darren Weir is looking at a two-pronged assault in Saturday week’s $250,000 Inglis Cup (2000m) at Caulfield.

Weir will start Wednesday’s Pakenham winner Kevin’s Time and “more than likely’’ Monday’s Wodonga winner Craven Image in the Inglis Cup on Underwood Stakes Day.

Kevin’s Time, a $100,000 purchase at the 2014 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale, is starting to accrue an impressive overall record.

Today’s victory was his second from just five career outings and the future looks bright for the four-year-old son of Flying Spur.

“He’s a nice horse, a horse we’ve always had a bit of time for and he’s really showing us that on the track now,’’ Weir’s racing manager Jeremy Rogers said.

“He’s definitely got the ability to be winning better races than a Benchmark 64 at Pakenham, that’s for sure.

“Barring any hiccups, he’ll get his chance at a Saturday class race now in the Inglis Cup and Brad Rawiller will ride him again, assuming he gets a Brad Rawiller weight.’’

Craven Image is also forming a solid early career record.

The son of Reset, who sold for $70,000 at the 2014 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale, has won two and finished second twice from just four career outings.

“The Wodonga race was just to get another win into him before he hopefully takes the next step,’’ Rogers said.

The Inglis Cup is a race restricted to four-year-olds who are nominated for the prestigious Inglis Race Series.
