Black Caviar became just the fourth horse to become a multiple Australian Horse of the Year winner when she was crowned for the second time last night.
BLACK CAVIAR ($210,000 2008 Premier, 6m Bel Esprit-Helsinge) joins Might And Power, Sunline and Makybe Diva as multiple winners of the coveted award, following a season where she added another nine wins to her unbeaten 22 race streak.
Under the guidance of Peter Moody, who was crowned Leading Group 1 trainer at the ceremony, the Rick Jamieson bred mare landed Group 1 wins in the Patinack Farm Classic, CF Orr Stakes, Lightning Stakes, Robert Sangster and the Goodwood in Australia.
She then had her crowning moment when overcoming serious concerns from within the stable to take the Group 1 Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot. In a reminder of the merit in that performance, runner-up Moonlight Cloud was triumphant in the Prix du Moulin at Longchamp overnight – her second Group 1 success subsequent to Royal Ascot.
Black Caviar polled 257 out of a possible 258 votes, while she received the maximum number of votes to take the Champion Sprinter award.
Her dam Helsinge, sold to Jamieson through the Inglis Australian Broodmare Sale for $115,000 in 2005, has become a pin up for buyers at Inglis yearling sales.
Last year her Casino Prince colt ALL TOO HARD fetched $1,025,000 and his dual Group 2 successes last season earned him third place in Champion 2YO voting. This year’ Helsinge’s Redoute’s Choice filly fetched $2.6million to BC3 Thoroughbreds.
Other Inglis graduates to feature in last night’s voting included MOSHEEN ($250,000 2010 Easter), who finished runner-up in the Champion 3YO Filly category. SAMAREADY ($150,000 2011 Easter) was runner-up to Pierro in the Champion 2YO award.
FOXWEDGE ($925,000 2010 Easter) was third and MANAWANUI ($45,000 2010 Classic) fourth in the Champion 3YO Colt or Gelding voting, while globetrotting mare ORTENSIA ($50,000 2007 Premier) was third to Black Caviar and Hay List in the Champion Sprinter award.
