Eagle Way Flies In The Queensland Derby

Bryan Guy delivered champion Hong Kong trainer John Moore his first Group 1 winner in Australia as an owner when Eagle Way (More Than Ready x Wedgetail Eagle) took out the Group 1 BRC Queensland Derby.

After purchasing the horse from the 2014 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling sale, Moore was left with the horse after the owner was unable to secure a permit in Hong Kong.

“Once he started training him, Bryan told me last year that I shouldn’t sell this horse back to Hong Kong because it would win the Queensland Derby and he was right,” Moore said.

“I have had four runners in Group 1’s but never have I been as nervous as that before a race or during it. It was a perfect ride from Tommy – it was a George Moore ride.” Eagle Way will be offered for sale to Hong King clients with Moore adding that Eagle Way “has gone better than Werther [beaten favourite for this race in 2015] I’m sure he will be sought after.”

Eagle Way is out of Lure (USA) mare Wedgetail Eagle and was bought for $200,000 by George Moore Bloodstock at 2014 Inglis Easter. Bred by the Maloney family of Segenhoe Stud, Peter O’Brien, General Manager Segenhoe Stud tweeted “Wonderful achievement for the Maloney family to breed a Group 1 winner from our first Easter consignment.”

Wedgetail Eagle has a 2YO filly and a yearling colt by exciting sire Hinchinbrook and was served by Choisir last spring.
