Easter Countdown

29th Mar 2006

Millionaire fillies Mnemosyne and Serenade Rose dazzled in the Melbourne Classics this Spring and look all set to take further honours this Autumn in Sydney.

Mnemosyne was chased home by Serenade Rose to win the MRC 1000 Guineas, while the latter named triumphed in the VRC Oaks just three-weeks later. The ultra-consistent Guineas winner, placed third in the Group 1 Coolmore Classic last Saturday, is on target for the Doncaster Handicap, while Serenade Rose heads for the Oaks after a possible start in the Arrowfield Stakes on Slipper Day.

The talented pair are both graduates of the 2004 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale - Mnemosyne sold through Broadwater Farm and Serenade Rose by Brooklyn Lodge Stud.

Both vendors are again sending up exceptional drafts to this year’s Easter Sale.

Brooklyn Lodge Stud

Mike Fleming’s Brooklyn Lodge Stud offers a select collection at Easter, having already hit the headlines this year as consignors of the Inglis Premier Sale-topper when their half-sister to Serenade Rose sold to Graeme Rogerson for $570,000.

Of four Brooklyn Lodge yearlings catalogued to take their turn in the ring Fleming marks out a colt (160) by exciting freshman sire Galileo as particularly eye-catching.

The August born yearling is out of a Zafonic full-sister to the talented sprinter-miler Trade Fair, from a Juddmonte family replete with black-type. The mare’s first foal, a two-year-old of this season, is the winning juvenile Zaffron Gal, also by Galileo.

“He’s a standout,” says Fleming. “He’s a good strong lovely moving type of colt and his full-sister is a two-year-old winner which is very encouraging as his sire was better at three.”

His two other colts are lot 120, the first foal of the stakes-placed Dehere mare Twiggy Summit, by Redoute’s Choice and lot 184, a son of Viking Ruler out of the Group 1 placed mare Arboretum.

The only filly of the draft is by Fusaichi Pegasus and is the first foal out of the multiple stakes-winning mare Youhadyourwarning (157).

“She’ll grow in to a lovely filly, she’s a really nice walking horse,” says Fleming.

Broadwater Farm

Broadwater Farm continues an outstanding year offering arguably their best ever Easter draft.

Among the 21 yearlings selling under the Broadwater banner are youngsters out of, or siblings to, an astounding six Group 1 winners.

The quality runs right through the draft from lot 1 an Elusive Quality half-sister to the Group 1 MacKinnon Stakes winner Casual Pass to lot 413 a Tale Of The Cat colt out of the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate winner Miss Kournikova.

The consignment is split evenly between colts and fillies, while there are progeny of 13 different stallions on offer.

Boom sire Encosta De Lago is particularly well represented by five fillies and two colts including a half-sister to the Group 1 Galaxy Stakes winner Black Bean (393).

One of his rostermates at Coolmore’s Jerry’s Plains base is Giant’s Causeway, who has one in the draft - lot 11 out of Rhys’ Star making the yearling filly a half-sister to the Group 1 Champagne Stakes winner Quick Star.

Another Broadwater yearling with a Group 1 winning sibling is set to go through just three lots later as lot 14. By Red Ransom the colt is a half-brother to the Oakleigh Plate winner River Dove.

Buyers can also expect to find other attractive colts in the consignment by sires such as Choisir, Fusaichi Pegasus, Hussonet, O’Reilly, Rubiton and Noverre. While legendary New Zealand sire Zabeel is represented by a filly (290) as is Redoute’s Choice (85).

Edinglassie Stud will offer Mnemosyne’s half-brother by Johannesburg as lot 431 at Easter this year.
