In all, 23 yearlings made in excess of $1,000,000 compared to 14 at last year’s sale. Interestingly, 14 of those 23 came from Session Three.

A year ago, a Redoute’s Choice colt out of Deja Slew broke the Australian record selling for $3 million, the highest priced yearling sold in Australia. That price was matched this year when another son of Danehill, Rock of Gibraltar (IRE) sired a colt out of L’On Vite (USA). The colt is a three-quarter-brother to the recently retired European Group One winner, Holy Roman Emperor. Trainer, Gai Waterhouse purchased the yearling offered by Coolmore Stud.

During Thursday’s final session, Woodlands Stud purchased an Encosta De Lago filly out of Twyla for $2.2million, the highest priced filly to sell at this year’s Australian Easter Yearling Sale.

Once again, sire sensation Redoute’s Choice proved to be the star attraction. Arrowfield Stud’s Danehill stallion accounted for eight of the top ten lots, with 57 youngsters selling for an average of $662,105.

Coolmore’s Encosta de Lago was also exceptionally popular. Of the 45 lots on offer, 39 yearlings sold for an average of $644,487, clearly up on last year’s average of $585,500.

As previously mentioned, Coolmore’s seven-time Group 1 winner Rock Of Gibraltar (IRE) sired this year’s top priced lot, a colt out of L’On Vite (USA). Consequently, Rock of Gibraltar’s (IRE) aggregate for the 23 yearlings sold was a strong $7,505,000.
