Eucumbene makes it three on the trot

Racenet - Nic Ashman - Saturday, 2 June 2012

The Guy Walter-trained Eucumbene completed a hat-trick of wins with an effortless victory in Saturday’s Ranvet Handicap (1300m) at Warwick Farm.

Eucumbene (pictured as yearling) jumped straight to the front and the victory never looked in doubt. It was the galloper’s third win in four starts since being gelded.

"He’s really come on since being gelded. He may have turned the corner,” winning rider Kathy O’Hara said.

"I didn’t try to fight him too much today. I just kept him out in the middle on his own.”

Eucumbene had shown a tendency to pull in his races but O’Hara said "when he strode along in front he seemed to relax better”.

Eucumbene defeated From The Vault by 4-3/4 lengths with Colour Purple a further two lengths away in third.

The son of Encosta De Lago is a half-brother to Group I winner Snowland and Golden Slipper placegetter Portillo.

Meanwhile, Peter Robl took out the jockeys’ honours at Warwick Farm with a double.

Robl piloted Ninth Legion to a fast finishing victory in the Regupol Equine Surfaces (1400m) before taking out the feature event of the day, the Listed Winter Cup, aboard the Gai Waterhouse-trained Reuben Percival.

Apprentice hoops Sam Clipperton, Chad Schofield and Shaun Guymer all bagged a winner each.

Bred by Mr PJ Fleming EUCUMBENE (4g Encosta de Lago-Snowdrift) was a $300,000 purchase by James Bester from the draft of Tyreel Stud at the 2009 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.
