A capacity field of 16 is set to line up in the world’s richest juvenile race at Rosehill Gardens this Saturday and from Sheikhs to syndicates everyone has had the opportunity to buy into a runner in the $3.5 million ATC Golden Slipper Stakes.
Six two-year-olds representing Inglis’ three major yearling sales will be out to become the 22nd Inglis graduate to win the Golden Slipper; Extreme Choice and Yankee Rose from Inglis Classic, Defcon and Sweet Sherry from Inglis Premier, and Flying Artie and Quick Feet from the Inglis Easter Yearling Sale.
Extreme Choice and Yankee Rose are two runners that enter the Golden Slipper with unbeaten records. Darby Racing was offering 5% shares in Yankee Rose for just $1,990 following her purchase as a yearling, and while her value has skyrocketed since so has that of Extreme Choice. The Not A Single Doubt colt was bought for $100,000 by Mick Price Racing and after winning the Inglis Nursery and Chairman’s Stakes the colt was high on the wish list of many studs. Extreme Choice will carry China Horse Club’s colours in the Slipper after Teo Ah Khing, Newgate Farm and partners secured a controlling interest in Blue Diamond winning colt, a very lucrative result for his original owners.
Race favourite Extreme Choice is one of three colts part owned Newgate Farm, with Henry Field’s burgeoning stud sharing with James Harron Bloodstock and others in the ownership of last start Black Opal Stakes winner Defcon and Breeders Plate victor Capitalist.
Paul Whelan is usually a seller at the Inglis Easter Yearling Sale, but last year Paul joined forces with Wilf Mula and friends to secure Flying Artie for $50,000. The colt by Artie Schiller is second favourite for the $3.5 million race and after a fast finishing second placing from barrier 13 in the Blue Diamond trainer Mick Price is very pleased that the colt drew barrier 5 for this Saturday’s contest.
Goodwood Farm will have a keen eye on the Golden Slipper in the hope that Flying Artie, which they sold last year, will add a very favourable update to the colt’s half-brother by Helmet that Kerrie Tibbey’s Murrurundi operation will offer as Lot 309 at the 2016 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.
Southern Cross Breeders, Widden Stud and Bell River Thoroughbreds will also offer siblings to 2016 Golden Slipper runners at upcoming Inglis Select Yearling Sales.
Widden Stud will offer the sister to Star Turn as Lot 327 at Easter next month, while Southern Cross Breeders will offer Lot 257, the Smart Missile half-sister to Quick Feet. A daughter of Northern Meteor, Quick Feet was purchased for owner Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Maktoum for $540,000 at the 2015 Easter Sale and will start from the inside barrier 1 in the Golden Slipper.
131 yearlings in the upcoming Easter Sale are by sires that have runners in the Golden Slipper Stakes; Street Cry (28 yearlings in Easter), Redoute’s Choice (24), Medaglia D’Oro (17), Exceed And Excel (17), More Than Ready (16), Choisir (12), Star Witness (7), Manhattan Rain (5), Written Tycoon (2), Not A Single Doubt (2) and Lope de Vega (1).
The first crop of 2012 Golden Slipper champion Pierro are catalogued in the 2016 Easter Sale. The son of Lonhro has 41 yearlings in the sale, while fellow Slipper winners Sebring (43 yearlings), Sepoy (25) and Stratum (11) are also well represented.
Yearlings from two Golden Slipper winners will also be offered at Easter. A colt by 2011 winner Sepoy from 2003 winner Polar Success will be offered by Vinery Stud as Lot 13. While a So You Think colt from Merlene will be sold as Lot 398 by Daandine Stud.
Buyers will have to wait a little longer to purchase Extreme Choice’s half-sister by Duporth, for the filly will be sold by Bell River Thoroughbreds at the Inglis HTBA Scone Yearling Sale on 15 May 2016. Their dam Extremely, carrying a full relation to Extreme Choice, will be also sold among the Bell River Thoroughbred’s unreserved dispersal of mares at the Inglis Australian Broodmare and Weanling Sale in Sydney on 1, 2, 3 and 4 May 2016.
The catalogue for Scone is currently being finalised, while the 580 lot Easter Yearling Sale catalogue is available online at inglis.com.au and via the Inglis Sales iPad App. Hard copy catalogues can be requested by sending an email to catalogue@inglis.com.au or call Inglis on +61 2 9399 7999.
