Super Eighty Eight gave Golden Slipper winner Sebring an edge in his dynamic tussle with Northern Meteor for leading first season sire with a brilliant debut win at Belmont Park yesterday.
Sebring (12 wins) trailed Northern Meteor by one in the stallion battle, but Super Eighty Eight's victory, following Pitcrew's success at Canterbury earlier in the day, ensured he regained the lead inside the final two months of the season.
Super Eighty Eight, a $1.70 favourite, gave backers few doubts, jockey Jarrad Noske firing him out of the gates before kicking clear at the top of the straight. The Dan Morton-trained Miss Halloween ($4) closed to within half a length by the post, but never threatened to nail the winner over the 1000m.
Kuala Lumpur-based trainer Shane Edwards paid $100,000 for Super Eighty Eight at last year's Sydney Easter yearling sale.
Winning trainer Chris Gan- gemi's brother Michael brought the juvenile across from Victoria two months ago
"It was good for the owners, many who are owners for the first time," Gangemi said.
"He can want to go too hard and he is going to have to settle down."
