Fabulous Results For Fastnet Rock

Racing And Sports - Sunday, 18 March 2012

The Group One win by glamour filly Mosheen at Randwick on Saturday was the icing on the cake for super sire Fastnet Rock after a fabulous 24 hours of results that included three Group winners.

Mosheen (Fastnet Rock x Sumehra, by Stravinsky) again asserted her dominance over the colts with an amazing victory in the GI Randwick Guineas to add to what is fast becoming a benchmark record for a three-year-old filly.

The Robert Smerdon trained 3YO finished second in last year's G1 Golden Slipper (1200m) at Rosehill, coasted to a nine lengths win in the GI VRC Oaks at Flemington in the spring over 2500 metres and has now beaten the colts twice in successive starts in Group One races over 1600 metres.

Mosheen thrashed the colts in the GI Australian Guineas at Flemington on March 3 and repeated that effort in the Randwick Guineas, becoming the first filly to win or place in the race since it replaced the Canterbury Guineas in 2006.

Purchased for $250,000 from the Bylong Park Thoroughbreds draft at the 2010 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, Mosheen has the impressive record of six wins and five placings from 13 starts with $2.3 million in prizemoney.

From six starts at GI level, Mosheen has was won three and finished second twice, her only failure a sixth against the older mares in the GI Myer Classic last spring.

Raced by a partnership including her original owner Phil Sly and leading Japanese breeder Katsumi Yoshida, Mosheen is one of eight GI winners by Fastnet Rock and is the second of his GI winners trained by Robert Smerdon, who also prepares puts G1 Goodwood winner Lone Rock.

Mosheen is the first foal of the Stravinsky mare Sumehra, a winning half-sister to GI HK Derby and International Mile winner Lucky Owners and stakes-winner Miss Power Bird from the family of champion stayer Might And Power, whose wins included Melbourne Cup, Caulfield Cup and Cox Plate.

Fastnet Rock also featured at Randwick when his two year-old filly Jade Marauder booked her berth in the Golden Slipper with a fast finishing win in the G3 Sweet Embrace Stakes.

Carrying the famous cerise colours of the Ingham family Jade Marauder (Fastnet Rock x Jade Diva, by Jade Robbery) was a $500,000 Inglis Easter purchase from the draft of Yarraman Park Stud.

Foaled and raised at Yarraman Park, Jade Marauder is the second stakes-winner for her stakes-winning dam Jade Diva and is a three-quarter sister to top class filly Bliss Street, a G3 winner in Perth and Melbourne.

Jade Marauder is the 29th stakes-winner for Fastnet Rock, who was also in the frame at Moonee Valley on Friday night when his three year-old son Highly Recommended took out the G2 Alister Clark Stakes.

Highly Recommended (Fastnet Rock x Suggestive, by Al Hareb) won his first Black Type event by half a length, taking his record two wins and six placings from 12 starts with prizemoney in excess of $280,000

He is prepared by Peter Moody, who trained fellow Fastnet Rock colt Wanted to win the G1 Newmarket Handicap in 2010.

Adding to Fastnet Rock's bumper weekend of winners was the blue-blooded filly She's A Fox , who made a sizzling debut to win at Canterbury on Friday night.

“She's always shown us a lot at home and has looked the part from the time she was a yearling, so it's good to see her put it altogether tonight,” said trainer Anthony Cummings.

“She has a very bright future and we'll look to qualify for the Golden Slipper. We'll see how she pulls up and that will decide which qualifying race we go for but we'll certainly be giving it a shot.”

A $600,000 Inglis Easter purchase from the draft of Luskin Park Stud, She's A Fox is a full sister to G2 winner and GI placed Foxwedge, being by Fastnet Rock from Forest Native.

The current yearling from Forest Native is another filly by Fastnet Rock that will be offered by Luskin Park Stud at the 2012 Easter Sale.

A stakes-placed daughter of Storm Cat sire Forest Wildcat, Forest Native has had four foals to race for three winners.
