Fastnet Rock filly tops weanling section of Great Southern Sale

The weanling section of the 2012 Inglis Great Southern Sale in Melbourne came to a close on Wednesday, with the top two prices recorded for fillies by leading sires Fastnet Rock and Encosta de Lago.

Fastnet Rock appears to have an unassailable lead in the 2011/12 Australian Sires Premiership and it was his daughter from USA stakes winner Chelsey’s Image that recorded the top price of $145,000 today. Bred and offered by Burnewang North Pastoral as Lot 224 the filly was purchased by Steve Brem.

Another filly from a USA stakes winner, this time by Encosta de Lago from Les Ry Leigh, recorded the day’s second highest price when selling to Belmont Bloodstock for $130,000. Also bred and offered by Burnewang North Pastoral the Encosta filly (pictured) was sold as Lot 814 in the supplementary section.

143 weanlings were traded at Oaklands today, adding $1,253,350 to the total sale gross, which finished at $2,564,050 for the weanling section of the four day Great Southern Sale.

Online bidding was again strong in Melbourne, with 86 lots receiving bids from buyers over the internet during the past two days and 14 weanlings being sold online.

“Quality sold well again today, with vendors who offered well-presented and good credentialed weanlings suitably rewarded in the ring, however it was tough for those who did not read the market well,” Inglis Melbourne Director Peter Heagney said.

“We had buyers from every state in Australia and good support from New Zealand, who were keen to compete for the better lots,” Heagney added.

Damon Gabbedy’s Belmont Bloodstock finished the weanling section as the leading individual buyer, signing for five lots for $204,000 across Tuesday and Wednesday.

Paul Willetts added another three weanlings to his haul today, taking his total spend to $167,000 for six lots over the last two days.

New Zealand operations Regal Farm and Hallmark Stud also had a successful few days, purchasing four weanlings for $116,000 and three weanlings for $80,000 respectively.

Weanlings that passed in on the first two days of the Great Southern Sale are available for sale via the Inglis Make-An-Offer service.

The 2012 Great Southern Sale moves onto broodmares and mixed bloodstock in the coming two days, May 24 and 25. Online catalogue for this section of the sale can be viewed HERE

“There has been plenty of value buying from the Great Southern Bloodstock Sale each year and with top breeding prospects such as Avienus to be offered in the coming days we welcome everyone back to Oaklands,” Heagney added.

The dams of subsequent Group 1 winners Sacred Choice and Scenic Blast, plus recent Group 3 winner Dinkum Diamond, are just a few of the great value broodmares purchased at the Great Southern Sale in the past and this year’s catalogue again offers shrewd buyers plenty of upside.

Leading broodmare sires Zabeel, Danehill, Flying Spur, Canny Lad, Snippets, Grand Lodge, Success Express, Last Tycoon, Centaine, Octagonal and Rory’s Jester are all represented with stock in the sale, plus leading sires Fastnet Rock, Redoute’s Choice and Encosta de Lago.

There are 17 stakes winning broodmares to be offered including Group 1 winner Northwood Plume, Group 2 winning mare Avienus and Group 3 winners Victoire, Ascending and Miss Pavlova.

200 fillies and mares that are either half, three-quarter or full sisters to stakes performers have been catalogued for sale in Melbourne on the final two days of the 2012 Inglis Great Southern Sale.

The stallions include Group 3 winners Pillar Of Hercules, Primus and Tully Dane.

There is also a good selection of yearlings, unbroken stock and racehorses in this week’s catalogue including stakes placed mares Metonymy and Miss Elvee, along with plenty of city winners, unraced and lightly raced stock.

Days Three and Four of this year’s Great Southern Sale will both begin at 10:30am and be broadcast on Inglis Sale Day live, with Online Bidding and Make-An-Offer available for those buyers unable to attend the Oaklands complex.
