A 550km trip from Randwick to the Albury paid big dividends for the connections of Fat Al today, with the Easter Two gelding collecting a $50,000 Inglis Race Series Bonus for his connections when taking out the Myer Albury Guineas (1400m).
Fat Al ($27,000 2010 Easter II, 3g Al Maher-Fatoon) has been targeted at the lucrative Inglis Race Series Bonus races by his astute trainer Gai Waterhouse and after just missing a $100,000 Bonus when second at Warwick Farm in November the decision was made to take the Queensland Derby prospect to Albury for a first-up assault at the $50,000 Bonus on offer today.
The Al Maher gelding settled midfield in today’s 1400m event and when given plenty of galloping room by jockey Tommy Berry down the wide Albury straight Fat Al strode away to a one and a half-length victory over $9,000 Inglis Scone Yearling Sale buy Falklands.
The impressive win was certainly not lost on Alvar Poulton, Store Manager of Myer Albury, who was on hand to present the winning trophies with Myer Ambassador Laura Dundovic.
"What an exhilarating Myer Albury Guineas we have witnessed here today, Myer is excited to have Inglis as part of our sponsored race on Albury Gold Cup day for the first time in 2012. We congratulate Gai Waterhouse, Tommy Berry and all Fat Al’s owners who take home the $50,000 bonus,” Mr Poulton said.
“Myer has a long standing association with racing across Australia and one that we are proud of. Fashion, Myer and racing go hand in hand and with an exciting mix of brands, Myer remains at the forefront of traditional and contemporary race wear.
“As a proud sponsor of the Albury Racing Club until 2014, we look forward to many more exciting Myer Albury Guineas,” Poulton added.
The connections of Fat Al take home a total $86,000 today when adding the $50,000 Inglis Race Series Bonus to the $26,000 first prizemoney and $10,000 BOBS Bonus available on the Myer Albury Guineas.
Gai Waterhouse will be aiming Fat Al at the Group Three ATC Carbine Club Stakes at Randwick on April 14, with a view to a trip north towards the Group One BRC Queensland Derby in June.
The Inglis Race Series now moves back to Bendigo in Victoria next month with the running of the $100,000 2YO Inglis Autumn Plate (1100m) on April 11, which is restricted to horses offered at last year’s Inglis Melbourne Autumn Yearling Sale and paid up into the Inglis Race Series.
Buyers next chance to purchase a yearling for entry into the $5million Inglis Race Series comes up at the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, the sale Fat Al was purchased from for just $27,000.
579 lots have been catalogued for this year’s three day Easter Yearling Sale in Sydney on April 10 to 12, including Fat Al’s brother (Lot 154) which will be offered by Emirates Park.
