Two of the race hopefuls Zanzidiym and Cenotaph both hail from the same farm - Matt Brown’s fledgling Monterey Stud.
It is a particularly remarkable achievement for Brown who founded the Romsey farm just five years ago and from his six strong 2003 foal crop, sold only three at the 2005 Premier sale through his Uncle’s Kilora operation.
With AJC Oaks hopeful More Than Lucky also flying the Monterey flag, Brown could not wish for a better foundation on which to grow his young business.
“We’ve had a pretty good run considering we’ve sold only nine yearlings, six have raced and from those three are decent metropolitan performers and maybe potential stakes winners,” Brown said this morning.
He is hopeful of the pair’s chances this weekend but is satisfied just to have them running.
“It’s nice just to be able to lift the profile of the farm a little and show we’ve done a good job. For any new stud it’s hard to get buyer recognition when first starting out so this is quite exciting.”
Monterey will offer four yearlings at the Premier sale this year, again through Kilora. Sadly there are no relations to the Premier race pair, by coincidence both their dams lost foals to Bel Esprit last season.
“By chance both mares lost their foals, so unfortunately no relatives this year, but both have bred nice Delago Brom foals - their careers really seem to be running parallels!” he said.
