First Win for Mentality Brother

Breednet - Tara Madgwick - Wednesday, 5 January 2011

There has been quite a wrap on Mentality’s three-quarter brother Reservoir and the son of Redoute’s Choice was able to justify it at Randwick on Wednesday when powering clear to score a good win over 1550 metres.

Prepared by Gerald Ryan, Reservoir was having his second race start after failing at his debut in Saturday grade, a performance that looked worthy of forgiveness.

On that occasion, nothing went quite right for Reservoir, who looked very new in the yard and copped a heavy bump before being galloped on just after straightening for home.

“He’s still a green horse, he’s still a young horse, he’s only had a couple of trials and a couple of races and I think he may get 2000m in the future,” Gerald Ryan said.

“We’ll work out whether we give him one more run now over the same sort of journey or give him a freshen-up and aim for something bigger.

“But I think there is a nice race in him one day.”

A $450,000 Inglis Easter purchase for Tony Bott’s Evergreen Rich Syndicate from the Arrowfield draft, Reservoir (pictured) is the sixth foal of imported Synaesthesia (USA), whose best offspring Mentaility has won eight races and $2million with Group I victories in the AJC Randwick Guineas and George Main Stakes to sit alongside his Champagne Stakes win as a juvenile.

A full sister to Reservoir fetched $400,000 at Inglis Easter last year, but his dam has no yearling for the sales this year having missed in 2008.
