Australian thoroughbreds have been flying high in South Africa this year with the latest to taste stakes success being Alinga, winner of the Listed East Coast Handicap at Clairwood on Sunday.

She is a 4YO mare by Rock of Gibraltar from Star of Broadway, by Quest for Fame,

Trained by Mike Bass, Alinga had been stakes-placed twice previously and powered away to win by four lengths taking her overall record to five wins and three placings from 13 starts.

A modest $90,000 purchase from the Yarraman Park draft at the 2008 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, Alinga was bred by Wilkes Thoroughbreds and is the third foal of Star of Broadway, a half-sister by Quest for Fame to Group I winners Naturalism and Crystal Palace, dam of current classy mare Palacio de Cristal.

Alinga is the 61st stakes-winner for Coolmore based Rock of Gibraltar, who shuttles to South America this year for the first time after spending eight consecutive southern seasons in Australia.
