Tattersalls - Press Release - Tuesday, 5 October 2010
A filly by GALILEO out of the half-sister to European Champion two and three-year-old NEW APPROACH was the star turn on the opening day of Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale, selling for 1,200,000 guineas. Trade on the opening day saw 146 lots sell for 14,921,000 guineas, at an average of 102,199 guineas and a median of 66,000 guineas.
The bay filly (pictured) by GALILEO out of the GREEN DESERT mare ALLURING PARK, who was consigned to the sale by Seamus Burns’ Lodge Park Stud, had received a major catalogue update when her half-sister JANOOD won the Listed Matalan Stakes. Grant Pritchard-Gordon, standing alongside Paul Makin had the ring buzzing when he opened the bidding on the filly at 500,000 guineas and the granddaughter of the Champion filly PARK EXPRESS soon attracted interest from agent Charlie Gordon-Watson and Coolmore supremo John Magnier, with the latter successful at 1,200,000 guineas at the expense of Pritchard-Gordon.
Following the sale Burns laughed: "I only had her reserved at 300,000gns, and even though I have been in this game a long time, you never quite know what is going happen! But I have always felt that she is the nicest I have ever bred and it is rare for things to click together so well."
The sale of lot 114, the bay colt by NAYEF out of the DARSHAAN mare BLUE SYMPHONY saw a rare head-to-head between the Coolmore and Maktoum powerhouses. Shadwell Estates’ Angus Gold made much of the running before being joined by John Magnier with the pair taking the price past 500,000 guineas. Gold was finally successful with his bid of 525,000 guineas for the half-brother to the Group 1 Fillies’ Mile second FANTASIA and the Listed placed PINK SYMPHONY.
Following his purchase Gold commented: "He was a lovely horse. I did not think he would make that much but he a very athletic horse who is light on his feet. He is by a stallion who is very dear to Sheikh Hamdan's heart. Blue Symphony is a young mare and has already produced a group winner and it is a fast family.”
The colt was consigned by Lady Carolyn Warren’s Highclere Stud on behalf of Luca and Sara Cumani and she commented: “He is a beautiful horse, and it just proves that when a nice horse appears the market is there."
Early in the evening agent Alex Cole went to 410,000 guineas to secure the GALILEO brother to the Group 2 winner DARASIM. The colt, who was another consigned by Highclere Stud, was purchased on behalf of Dubai based businessman Jim Hay and his wife Fitri and will go into training with Paul Cole at his Whatcombe Stables in Berkshire. The strapping yearling is out of the HALO mare DARARITA, the half-sister to multiple Group 1 winner DAR RE MI and this year’s Derby third REWILDING.
