GETTING A MARCH ON SPRING

The March Thoroughbred Sale has proven to be one of Victoria's foremost mediums for mixed bloodstock. A timely venue for buyers seeking to ‘gear up' for the coming breeding season.
That was certainly the case at Oaklands Junction today with 138 lots sold (clearance 88.5%), contributing to an overall sales gross of $939,700 at an average of $6,809 (up 14% on the 2006 March Sale average).
The cream, naturally enough, rose to the surface and there was spirited competition among buyers for the choice lots, accentuated by Woodlands Stud's annual reduction.
Broodmare highlights of the day included Octagonal mare Sienna (Lot 136), in foal to Arena, who was knocked down to Queensland's Heinrich Bloodstock for $70,000, who were also the successful bidders on Barnes Fair (Lot 68), paying $32,000 for the Belong To Me mare in foal to Umatilla. Victoria's Lynden Park snared second top price among the broodmares when Nuclear Freeze mare Radiant Charm (Lot 114), a half sister to Group Two winner Infinite Grace and in foal to Desert King, was sold to Bat Pty Ltd for $45,000.
The stallion section, the final four offerings of the session, also garnered much interest with Group Two winning juvenile Danger Looms finding a new home to a bid of $52,000 from Woodbine Farm in New Zealand.
“I was delighted with today's results which is indicative of the sustained growth in the thoroughbred industry,” Inglis Director Peter Heagney enthused. “It also emphasises the role that the March Thoroughbred Sale plays, providing buyers with the opportunity to purchase a wide range of bloodstock, particularly broodmares, with many of these in foal to leading stallions and others with quality foals at foot.
“Woodlands Stud's decision to utilise March for its Annual Reduction also underlines this auction's relevance to the nation's sales diary.”
The March Thoroughbred continues at Oaklands Junction from 11am tomorrow with Yearlings, Weanlings, Unbroken Stock, Fillies & Mares and Colts & Geldings all up for grabs.
