Gibraltar Girl tops $5.4m Digital Sale

A trio of quality mares and stallion Signore Fox have sold for a combined $1.285 million, contributing to an overall gross of $5.4 million in the Inglis Digital July (Late) Online Sale.

The Stakes-placed Gibraltar Girl (Manhattan Rain), in foal to Capitalist, was secured by the Lucky Vega Syndicate for $365,000 following a competitive final half hour of bidding, with three individual buyers involved from the $300,000 mark.

Out of multiple black-type winner Gibraltar Campion (Rock of Gibraltar), Gibraltar Girl hails from a strong family and one that Mr Zhang has already enjoyed success with, as representative Sam Fairgray pointed out.

“Another nice Stakes-performing mare joins our broodmare band, she’s in foal to one of Australia’s most promising stallions.

“She’s from a family we know well through Mr Zhang’s first Stakes winner in Australia – Holy Snow,” Fairgray said.

Gibraltar Girl was offered by Newgate on behalf of her owners Greg and Donna Kolivos, who have bred two Snitzel fillies from her, including a $425,000 yearling purchase for Gai Waterhouse, Adrian Bott and Kestrel Thoroughbreds at Inglis Easter this year.

“Since selling three yearlings via the Inglis Easter [Virtual] Sale during Covid in 2020, we haven’t had another opportunity to utilise the Digital platform until today,” Kolivos said.

“When we decided to trim our broodmare band a little before this coming breeding season, we thought we needed to offer a mare of some quality and it’s fair to say we are very happy with the result achieved by Inglis Digital once again.

“No doubt the final selling price is indicative of the work done by the Inglis Digital team in assembling such a competitive buying bench for this type of sale.”

Sunlight’s half sister Solar Cry (Street Cry) – offered by Segenhoe Stud in foal to Flying Artie – to Cambridge Stud for $310,000 while Mathew Becker’s Group 1 Bloodstock went to $300,000 for G3-winning mare How Womantic (The Wow Signal), offered by Spicer Thoroughbreds.

“I bought her on behalf of a partnership, for Bill Pearce and Rob Cummings, she will be retired now and will likely visit I Am Invincible,” Becker said.

“Bill is a relatively new client for me and we’ve been on the lookout for his bloodstock portfolio the last few months but it’s been tough to buy quality mares like this.

“We saw How Womantic at Ciaron’s [Maher] farm this morning and we really liked her on type. We love these speed mares anyway but she has a lot of quality, a deep girth and a big, strong mare overall.

“She has a lovely way about her and we just liked her immediately, she is everything you want in a yearling so hopefully she pass on her traits and ‘Vinnie’ is a great stallion to start off a young mare’s breeding career.”

Other highlight results in the July (Early) Sale include maiden broodmares Hela (Night Of Thunder) and Hasstobegood (Per Incanto) which sold for $150,000 and $120,000 respectively, while Courtesan (Mastercraftsman), carrying a pregnancy to hot sire Maurice made $100,000.

A weanling Capitalist colt from Zoustar mare Zouriana was another six-figure result, selling for $135,000.

The Godolphin draft saw nine geldings sell for a combined $376,700, headed by multiple city winner Dhakuri (Contributer) which was bought by BBT as agent for $115,000.

10 horses sold for $100,000 or more in the July (Early) Sale, taking the overall number of six figure Inglis Digital results to 253.

Overall, the July (Early) Sale grossed $5,402,150 and posted a clearance of 79%.

Graduates of the platform this season can boast 2832 Australian race wins and $40,278,787 in prizemoney so far, including Fengarada, a $20,000 buy for Pakenham trainer John Leek Jnr in the June (Late) Sale – who recouped his purchase price and then some – with victory at Sandown today.

Entries for July (Late) – the final Inglis Digital sale of the 2021/22 season – will close at midnight on Wednesday, July 20.

Attention now turns to the ‘Sierra Sue Sale’, with the dual G1-winning mare to be offered in a bespoke Inglis Digital Auction on July 19-20.

The daughter of Darci Brahma is one of just three multiple G1-winnning mares to be offered for sale off the track this year in Australia, with the others being Shout The Bar and Tofane.

Bidding will open at 9am (AEDT) on Tuesday July 19, with the final countdown of bidding beginning at 4pm on Wednesday July 20.
