Gold graduate wins $200,000 Inglis 2YO Challenge

G1-winning jockey-turned-trainer Peter Robl scored one of the biggest wins of his training career today, when Overfull powered home in the $200,000 Inglis 2YO Challenge at Scone.

When the Gold Coast-based Robl, along with Upper Bloodstock’s Ross Lao and Andy Lau, spotted the Overshare filly at the Inglis Gold Sale last year, they devised a plan to target the Scone feature.

“It really was this Inglis Challenge that was front and centre in our minds when we bought her at Oaklands, it’s great prizemoney at $200,000 and we bought her for just $14,000 so it made absolute sense,’’ a delighted Robl said post-race.

“The Inglis Race Series is so good because you can be running for the $2m and $1m in the Millennium and Sprint, sure, but a race like this where only certain horses are eligible, it gives everyone a chance to get their hands on the great prizemoney.

“This is a nice filly, we’ve always liked her and she’s been so honest in her three runs before today and we thought this was a nice race for her and she did it well.’’

Overfull scored a comfortable victory today, eased down by jockey Jag Guthmann-Chester in the latter stages to defeat Magical Moments and Brutal Love.

Robl and Upper Bloodstock purchased Overfull from the draft of her breeder Mario Cesnik of Riverina Downs at last year’s Gold Yearling Sale at Oaklands for $14,000.

“It’s amazing, we’ve still got the mare and I’m just working out now who we send her too because I never send a mare to the same stallion twice,’’ Cesnik said.

“She was always a beautiful filly, we foaled her down and she just always gave us that good feeling.

Hopefully now she can go on and win some black type and really go on with it.’’

Following today’s race, Overfull is now a two-time winner of more than $150,000 in prizemoney from just four starts.

Robl also received a pair of Swarovski Optik binoculars for being the winning trainer of an Inglis Race Series event.
