GREAT SOUTHERN SALE – Victoria’s Newest Icon

28th Feb 2007

The June Weanling and Thoroughbred Sale has, somewhat appropriately, been re-named the Great Southern Sale.

Certainly, in terms of its mixed offerings (weanlings, broodmares, yearlings, unbroken stock and racehorses), this sale is the biggest and best that Victoria has to offer.

The best has just got better. In an announcement coinciding with the closure of entries for the Easter Broodmare Sale, William Inglis & Son has waived commission on any lots sold at the Great Southern Sale for $100,000 or greater.

Inglis Director, Peter Heagney has welcomed the initiative which brings the sale right in line with its Easter counterpart; “Sure, in the past we haven’t sold that many six figure weanlings and broodmares, but that may well change in the future. Indeed, the Great Southern Sale presents an ideal opportunity, in terms of timing and venue, for owners to sell their prized race fillies or race mares. Late June is really an ‘in between’ period as far as our racing carnivals are concerned and the zero percent commission is a tremendous incentive for those owners wishing to utilise an auction that attracts such a solid buying bench”. Peter Heagney said.

“It’s also well worth remembering that there is no pass-in commission on weanlings and broodmares. Perhaps the most encouraging aspect of the Great Southern Sale is its growth in recent years. In 2003 the sale was conducted over three days, while last year it ended up being a 5-dayer.

“From the feedback I’m already getting, don’t be surprised to see it stretch to five days again this year.” Peter Heagney added.

The Great Southern Sale will commence on Sunday 24 June and entries close on Friday 27 April.
