Great Southern Weanling Average up 22%

The Great Southern Weanling Sale came to a conclusion this afternoon, with the sale building on the excellent start made yesterday to post a 22% increase in average and 61% growth in gross takings.

Today’s sale grossed $1,707,100, which was almost identical to the Day 1 figure, but notably today, the clearance rate of the second session topped 90%.

It brought the sale total to $3,412,750, with 318 weanlings selling at an average of $10,731 and overall clearance rate of 86%. The sale median of $5000 remained at more than twice the level achieved in 2009.

“In some respects, the sale was even stronger today, considering the outstanding clearance rate and we have to regard the weanling session as a very successful sale,” Inglis Director Peter Heagney said.

“Obviously we had some pinhookers here, but I think there are also a lot of people who like to buy these horses now and wait a little longer, rather than paying the extra premium that comes at a yearling sale.

“Again, we had buyers from every state in Australia and the New Zealand contingent remained strong today.”

Today’s session was topped by Darley’s bay filly by Lonhro from the Sadler’s Wells mare Theatre School, which went to New Zealand’s Paul Willets for $73,000.

It completed a good sale for Darley stallions, with Lonhro’s progeny filling the top two positions and Commands having the third highest price of the sale.

“A number of first crop sires also had progeny sell well, in particular the Victorian based Magnus, who had two of the top 16 highest priced lots,” Heagney said.

Horses passed in over the past two days are still available for sale via the Inglis Make an Offer service.

We now move to the Great Southern Bloodstock Sale, which begins from 11am tomorrow and continues through Thursday and Friday.

The sale will again be broadcast on Inglis Sale Day Live
