Group 1 Aims For Exciting Quartet

Exciting quartet Instinction, Snitzerland, Cavalry Rose and Hioctdane will aim higher for Group 1 glory following valuable wins across two states on Saturday.

Flashy grey entire Instinction ($300,000 2010 Premier, 4h Exceed And Excel-De Lago Mist) got the ball rolling when he showed an impressive turn of foot at Caulfield to race away to a one and a half-length victory over Dusty Star and Veewap in the Listed MRC Weekend Hussler Stakes over 1400m in Melbourne.

$3million earner Weekend Hussler was an $80,000 purchase from the Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale so it was only fitting that the race named in his honour was won by a graduate of the same select sale.

Instinction (pictured) was much admired at the 2010 Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale where Mick Price and Blue Sky Thoroughbreds had to go to $300,000 to secure the strapping colt from the draft of Three Bridges Thoroughbreds.

“He is a nice horse and hopefully he can get 1600m because it will open a few options for him”, trainer Mick Price said after Saturday’s win.

Price indicated they will aim higher with Instinction. The Group 2 MVRC Crystal Mile at Moonee Valley on October 27 will be the entire’s next target before the Group 1 VRC Emirates Stakes at Flemington on November 10.

Bred by P Katelanis, Instinction is the first foal of Encosta de Lago mare De Lago Mist, which was a Group 2 winner of the VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes in 2006.

Instinction is one of 55 stakes winners for his sire Exceed And Excel, which is set to have another strong showing at Inglis’ Select Yearling Sales Series in 2013.

The very next race at Caulfield fellow Inglis yearling sale graduate Snitzerland ($125,000 2011 Premier, 3f Snitzel-Monte Rosa) took her career earnings past $1.3million with victory in the $250,000 MRC Blue Sapphire over 1200m.

Racing against the colts Snitzerland showed plenty of tenacity to fight off Fire Thunderbolt and Lankan Rupee in the run to the line, stopping the clock at 1:10.09.

Trainer Gerald Ryan confirmed after the win that owners Steve McCann and Neil Werrett will continue to aim higher with the top three-year-old sprinting filly, with the Group 1 VRC Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) at Flemington on November 3 the ultimate goal.

“She has won four in a row so what more can you do? She has beaten the colts more than she’s beaten the fillies and she keeps digging,” Ryan said.

Bred by Arrowfield Stud the daughter of Snitzel was a $125,000 purchase by Gerald Ryan from the draft of Bellerive Stud at the 2011 Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale.

Cavalry Rose ($85,000 2011 Classic, 3f Charge Forward-Alberton Rose) then made it three races in a row at Caulfield for Inglis yearling sale graduates when taking out the Group 3 MRC Thoroughbred Club Stakes over 1200m.

The Triple Crown Syndications runner was sent straight to the front by jockey Nash Rawiller and the game filly defied all challenges in the straight to defeat Mareeza and Saturn Rock in a slick 1:10.03.

The daughter of Charge Forward was bred by G Briscoe and sold to Triple Crown Syndications for $85,000 from the draft of Widden Stud at the 2011 Inglis Sydney Classic Yearling Sale.

Cavalry Rose’s connections are set to make a decision in the coming days on whether the filly heads to the Listed MVRC William Crockett Stakes on Friday 26 or they aim higher at the Group 1 VRC Coolmore Stud Stakes on November 3.

Over in Adelaide the Richard Jolly purchased and trained three-year-old Hioctdane ($46,000 2011 Classic, 3g Strada-Autobahn) led home an Inglis yearling sale trifecta in the Listed SAJC Hill Smith Stakes over 1800m at Morphettville.

At just start number four Hioctdane produced a tough staying effort to defeat last start winner Viking Star and the improving Nisos, recording his first black-type victory in the process.

The son of Strada was a $46,000 purchase by Jolly at last year’s Sydney Classic Yearling Sale and the gelding will now be sent for a spell before being aimed at Autumn riches including Group 1 SA Derby over 2500m next May.

Bred and sold by Forgotten Valley Stud, Hioctdane has inherited the dark brown colour of his damsire Octagonal and connections will also be hoping he has inherited some of the champion’s stamina as he gets over more ground later this season.
