Guineas awaits Under the Louvre

Jack Hill continued his excellent association with Under the Louvre at Caulfield on Saturday, guiding the talented three-year-old colt to his fifth win from eight starts in the $80,000 Charter Keck Cramer Handicap (1200m).

The son of Excellent Art settled in a rearward position and produced his signature finishing burst in the straight to sweep to victory.

Under the Louvre ($6) defeated Hard Stride ($6) by 1¾ lengths with Consorting ($3.70 favourite) a further short head away in third.

Under the Louvre was formerly trained by Tony Vasil but is one of several horses to transfer into Robert Smerdon’s care last month.

“Jack (Hill) has been the common denominator,” Smerdon said.

“Jack has ridden him in all his races and also rides his work. His work on Tuesday morning was pretty plain but Jack said reassured me that’s just him.”

“Our plan was to get back and track Consorting into the race.

“Consorting looked to be travelling really well with the blinkers and he was struggling a little bit but he found when he (Jack Hill) asked him,” he added.

Under the Louvre will have his next start in the $400,000 Inglis Guineas (1400m) at Scone on May 17. The race is open to Inglis graduates only. Under The Louvre was purchased for $50,000 from the 2012 Inglis Classic yearling sale.

After notching his fourth win over 1200 metres on Saturday, Under the Louvre took his prizemoney tally to $151,700.
