Champion sire Encosta de Lago (pictured) had two fillies running at Canterbury on Wednesday that were both purchased as yearlings for $1,5 million and while the first of them Little Surfer Girl went down by a short head after enduring a torrid run, the second of them Hades was able to open her winning account.

Trained by Joe Pride for Newhaven Park Stud and Wilkes Thoroughbred Syndicate, three year-old Hades had little luck from an outside draw forcing astute rider Glyn Schofield to make a forward move on the filly well before the home turn.

To her credit, Hades found plenty over the concluding stages to outgun her rivals and take the 1250 metre maiden by the best part of a length.

The addition of blinkers for this assignment was undoubtedly a winning move, the filly posting her first win at her sixth start having placed twice previously.

“She’ll go to the paddock now, she’s achieved her goal for this preparation,” said Joe Pride.

Charles Kelly was on hand to represent the owners and was relieved to see his blue-blooded filly break the ice.

“She’s raced without luck a lot of the time and did again today from the wide gate, so it was a very good win,” said Kelly.

Hades was purchased by Newhaven Park for $1.5 million at the 2007 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale from the draft of Corumbene Stud and is the first foal of Champion Two Year Old Hasna, a winner of seven races and $1.2 million highlighted by Group One victories in the AJC Sires’ Produce Stakes and AJC Champagne Stakes.

Hasna has had subsequent yearlings sell at Easter for $500,000 (Super Trooper, a colt by Rock of Gibraltar (IRE) and $360,000 (Miss Napolli, a filly by Redoute’s Choice) with a soon to be yearling colt by Flying Spur the next in the pipeline for George Altomonte’s highly successful boutique breeding operation.

The success of Hades adds a new winner to the tally for Encosta de Lago, the Coolmore heavyweight now steaming past 145 winners for the season.
