Hot Danish Sibling Tops Weanling Opener

An Encosta De Lago half-brother to former pin-up mare Hot Danish was the headline act at the opening session of today’s Inglis Australian Weanling and Breeding Stock Sale.

The brown colt, which was prepared for sale by Holbrook Thoroughbreds, was sold to David Parker for $150,000.

Holbrook also sold Hot Danish as a yearling to Les Bridge for a mere $32,000. She went on to amass $2.3million in earnings before her sad passing earlier this year.

The day’s top lot headed eight weanlings to make $50,000 or more during the session.

New Zealand based agent Michael Wallace was a keen player during the session, with his purchases including the day’s second and third highest priced lots.

Wallace gave $85,000 for Edinglassie’s Commands colt from the three times winning Magic Albert mare Magic Summer. Earlier he went to $71,000 for Vinery’s Magic Albert-Hearth colt. Hearth is a three-quarter-sister to Hong Kong Derby winner Super Satin.

Fellow New Zealand buyer Dean Hawthorne went to $70,000 for a first crop filly by Henrythenavigator. Prepared by Middlebrook, the filly is from the stakes placed Danehill mare Danesty from the family of former star filly Danendri.

In all, 130 weanlings sold today at a clearance of 80 per cent for a gross of nearly $1.9million and average of $14,567.

“The catalogue was down on pedigree from 2010, so given the horses we had to sell, it was a satisfactory result today,” Inglis Bloodstock Director Jonathan D’Arcy said.

“80 per cent is a good clearance rate at any weanling sale and I am sure buyers are pleased with the value they were able to secure during the session.

“There is certainly money to be made by pinhookers looking to sell some of these weanlings at next year’s yearling sales – as evidenced by the strong New Zealand presence today – and buyers should note those opportunities will continue tomorrow with a number of nice horses still to come.”

D’Arcy noted the absence of a number of buyers owing to the air traffic chaos which has engulfed Sydney this week.

“We had plenty of activity online from those buyers unable to attend, but ideally it’s always better to have agents and buyers on the ground to inspect the horses in the flesh,” he said.

The Select Weanling session continues from 10.30am tomorrow, which concludes with a supplementary catalogue, followed by a General Weanling Session, which also has a number of supplementary entries.

The Select Broodmare session begins tomorrow afternoon, before the sale concludes on Friday with General mares, stallion, yearling and racing stock sections. D'Arcy saidstrong supplementary entries had also been received for the racehorse section.

Horses passed in during today’s session are still available for sale via the Inglis Make an Offer service. In a new innovation, Inglis have had photos taken of all passed in lots from today’s sale and they can be viewed on the make an offer area of the website.

For those unable to attend the remaining sessions, the sale will be broadcast on Inglis Sale Day Live in addition to the Online Bidding service.
