Hot Snitzel favourite in Inglis Nursery at Randwick

The Daily Telegraph - Matt Stewart - Friday, 17 December 2010

KING of the kids Gerald Ryan says he's barely scratched the surface of his group of promising youngsters.

Ryan has been the trainer to beat in two-year-old races in Sydney this season, winning three Saturday juvenile races.

Hot Snitzel, an impressive but wayward debut winner last Saturday, is expected to start favourite in tomorrow's $250,000 Inglis Nursery at Randwick.

Dual winner Saramehna, who was one of the early fancies for the Golden Slipper, is in the paddock after two spring-summer wins.

"I'm not knocking either Saramehna or Hot Snitzel because they're nice horses, but I have to say I've got better ones at home -- quite a few, to be honest, and they're quite a bit better," he said.

Ryan said he doubted whether Hot Snitzel would measure up to the Blue Diamond or Golden Slipper, even though the horse is likely to be unbeaten in two starts after tomorrow's feature race.

"Not being cocky but I've got a half dozen at home that would take care of Hot Snitzel quite easily," he said.

Ryan's summer planning received a blow when the five youngsters he entered for the Blue Diamond were not received as entries by Melbourne Racing Club.

Ryan said he noticed the entry had not been acknowledged only when his secretary realised the fees had not been taken from Ryan's credit card.

Ryan said he was not bothered by the hiccup as two of the youngsters were now in the paddock and the other three weren't good enough.

A BREAK in Brisbane's summer deluge might at last enable the return of Queensland's best sprinter at Doomben tomorrow.

With the feature George Moore Stakes scrapped after being washed out on consecutive Saturdays, Burdekin Blues' comeback in a minor 1100m sprint heralds the delayed start of the carnival.

A stronger than usual field of horses who missed starts at the scrapped meetings will take on Burdekin Blues, winner of 11 of 19 starts but facing the challenges of a big weight, 61kg, and barrier 13.

Trainer Barry Baldwin will decide in the next few weeks whether Burdekin Blues will have a second crack at the Lightning Stakes at Flemington in January.
