Racenet - Brad Waters - Saturday, 30 July 2011
Hot Spin booked himself a date with the season's best juvenile Sepoy after the Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra-trained gelding proved too strong in Saturday's Dean McNeill Handicap (1000m) at Caulfield.
The son of Spinning World has won his past two starts in strong fashion. Co-trainer Mathew Ellerton said Hot Spin would probably meet the Golden Slipper and Blue Diamond winner in the Listed Vain Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield on August 13.
"It would be wrong to send him to the spelling paddock while he is going so well,” Ellerton said.
"I suppose racing against Sepoy is really the only option for him. He might get too much weight in other races.”
Hot Spin had the box seat before proving too strong last time out in the Inglis Bonus (1000m) at Caulfield on July 16. On Saturday, the rising three-year-old raced outside the leader, the Leon Corstens-trained Snitzem, in the $70,000 race before outslugging his rivals late to claim his second successive win.
The John McArdle-trained Kid Kobe hit the line strongly from just off the pace to claim second from Snitzem, who fought on well after working across from a wide gate.
"We thought he would end up in the same spot as he did last time, about fourth,” Zahra said.
"He got there easily from the barrier, travelled well and proved too good. He is such a professional horse who does his best every time he races.”
Saturday's success was Hot Spin's second from six starts.
