Brian Russell Media - Monday, 4 August 2014
Five sires, all Australian products who have captured the annual Champion Australian Sire title on earnings, will be among the mouthwatering collection of at least 70 which will be shown to invited disciples of breeding and racing when Hunter Valley studs conduct their pre season Stallion Parades in the period August 21-25.
It is annual showing that adds up to an opportunity to view what challenges as greatest concentration of sire talent in the world, that within the boundaries of the Hunter Valley. It is a line up that predictably in the 2014 season will service about 40% of the Australian broodmares and also many from New Zealand.
The most recent of the five Champion Sires included in this year’s showing is Redoute’s Choice (Danehill – Shantha’s Choice, by Canny Lad), carrier off of the 2013-14 title with estimated statistics of 95 winners (10 SWs) of 152 races and $10.3million. It was the third time he had annexed the title, claiming it earlier in 2005-06 and 2009-10.
All Hunter Valley sires who will be on show this year, his nearest rivals in the statistics for 2013-14, a year which ends on Thursday, are SNITZEL (Redoute’s Choice – Snippet’s Lass, by Snippets), 82 winners (13 SWs), 140 wins, $9.9million; FASTNET ROCK (Danehill – Piccadilly Circus, by Royal Academy), 149 winners (13 SWs), 222 wins, $9.5million; EXCEED AND EXCEL (Danehill – Patrona, by Lomond), 122 winners (13 SWs), 212 wins, $9.4million; MOSSMAN (Success Express – Lichen Lady, Twig Moss), 85 winners (8 SWs), 154 wins, $8.6million; and LONRO (Octagonal – Shadea, by Straight Strike), 157 winners (6 SWs) of 272 races and $8.2million.
Three of these sires, Fastnet Rock (2011-12), Exceed and Excel (2012-13) and Lonhro (2010-10), like Redoute;s Choice are in the group of five Champion Australian Sires who will be paraded. The source of 115 winners (9 SWs) of 200 races in 2013-14, the other Champion Sire is Encosta de Lago (Fairy King – Shoal Creek, by Star Way), the leader in 2007-08 and 2008-09.
The top two sires of 2013-14, Redoute’s Choice and Snitzel, are among nine at the Arrowfield Stud, Scone. Two others in their stallion yards are world class performers are Dundeel (NZ) (first season; High Chaparral – Stareel, by Zabeel) and Kentucky Derby and Dubai World Cup winner Animal Kingdom (USA) (second season; Leroidesanimaux – Dalicia, by Acatenango).
Another Kentucky Derby winner who will be on show will be Big Brown (USA) (Boundary – Mien, by Nureyev) and another who was successful in the Dubai World Cup is Street Cry (USA) (Machiavellian – Helen Street, by Troy). Big Brown is at Vinery, Scone with leading shuttle sire More Than Ready (USA) and Mossman (the 2013-14 leading juvenile sire on earnings) and Street Cry with two of the champion Australian sires, Exceed and Excel and Lonhro, at Darley. Lonhro set new Australian records in 2013-14 for most winners and wins in a year.
