The Weekend Hussler shadow is looming ominously over his GI Lightning Stakes rivals after the superstar impressed onlookers with his workout at Caulfield on Thursday morning.
The trainers’ hut at Caulfield was abuzz after the Hussler completed an 800 metre workout in 51.30 seconds, quickening to peel off his last 400 in 22.45 seconds despite appearing never to get out of second gear.
Being a group one winner, Weekend Hussler was given the use of the course proper at Caulfield as were those entered for Monday’s Australia Day meeting and the workout was conducted close to outside fence.
Rival Caulfield trainers were very impressed with the four-year-old’s work with some saying that the Hussonet gelding has never looked better going into the Lightning Stakes to be run on January 31.
For Weekend Hussler’s trainer Ross McDonald, the gelding’s work was pleasing.
“We’re quite happy with what he did this morning,” McDonald said.
“He ran time while under a fair hold but we have never really let him go at trackwork and his work was pretty good as it has been snce he came back into the stable."
McDonald said that Weekend Hussler would not head to Flemington to work down the straight next week as he was of the view that Weekend Hussler was familiar enough with the course.
“He’s never had a problem with the straight so we’ll just take him straight to the races on Saturday,” he said.
