Even the weather couldn’t dampen the enthusiasm of shoppers at the third and final session of a record breaking Inglis Classic Yearling Sale. By the time the hammer fell on Lot 585, 427 yearlings had found new homes at a gross of $16,708,409 ($15,107,900 in 2006) for an average of $39,129 ($35,886 in 2006) up 9% on last year. And, as a neon sign of market confidence, the sale also boasted a healthy clearance rate of 81.49%
Once again, competition was fierce at the top end with 12 yearlings sold today for $100,000 or more, bringing the sale total to 30, well up on the 14 six figure yearlings sold in 2006.
The Classic Yearling Sale has now gone to the next level with 10 horses making over $150,000, giving vendors confidence they can bring their best yearlings to the sale and achieve optimum results,” William Inglis & Son’s acting Managing Director, Jamie Inglis enthused. “The Inglis Classic Yearling Sale has again succeeded in attracting an international buying bench, while there was also solid competition among the locals, all seeking to capitalise on next year’s $500,000 race for sale graduates.
“The first and second sessions were topped by domestic agents and trainers, while today we welcomed another benchmark when the Street Cry colt (Lot 442), consigned on account of Redbank North, was sold to Hong Kong interests for $350,000. “But there was also plenty of interest from Europe and throughout South East Asia, underscoring the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale’s niche as an ideal venue for quality yearlings.”
Fittingly, it was the Street Cry colt and not the rain that had everyone running for cover as a bidding duel broke out between John Hutchinson and Randwick trainer, Les Bridge, to secure the rights to race this magnificent yearling. As the battle waged on, it was ‘whether’ not ‘weather’ that determined the result when Les decided to pull up stumps on $340,000. Not surprisingly, John Hutchinson was – to put it mildly – floating somewhere between Young Street, Randwick and ‘seventh heaven’.
“This colt simply filled all the criteria,” John pointed out. “He’s beautifully balanced and the x-rays were perfect. He is a colt I would expect to see at the Easter Yearling Sale, in fact, this is a colt that would make any yearling sale in the world!”
Purchasing the colt on behalf of a client of leading trainer Gary Moore, John added that the colt would likely race in Australia before eventually heading to Hong Kong.
“This colt is an international commodity. Look at the pedigree: he’s by Street Cry who is going sensationally in the northern hemisphere and is bred on very similar lines to Street Cry’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile-G1 winner, Street Sense”.
The show now moves south for the 2007 Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale from 4-6 March. The catalogue can be viewed online at http://pcs.inglis.com.au/auctions/sales.php?sale=07mpy
