Inglis Digital star Half Yours wins Caulfield Cup

Inglis Digital superstar Half Yours (St Jean) will look to become just the 13th horse in history to claim the Caulfield/Melbourne Cup double after comprehensively winning the first leg – the $5m G1 Caulfield Cup – today.

Bloodstock agent Damon Gabbedy of Belmont Bloodstock purchased Half Yours – on behalf of trainers Tony and Calvin McEvoy – for $305,000 from the 2024 Inglis Digital November (Late) Online Sale, when offered as part of the Halo Racing Unreserved Reduction Sale.

At the time Half Yours had raced just five times for two wins; in a Geelong Maiden and a BM64 at Cranbourne.

But the father/son training operation saw something in him they believed could take them to the top and today that day arrived emphatically, with a Caulfield Cup victory.

Jockey Jamie Kah rode Half Yours to perfection, settling one off the fence midfield before peeling wide around the home turn to time her run on the $2.40 favourite to perfection.

Since Half Yours (pictured) was purchased on Inglis Digital, he has won $3,471,400 in prizemoney, with the promise of much more to come, possibly as early as next month.

Such was the strength of today’s win, Half Yours firmed into a $5 favourite with Ladbrokes for the G1 Melbourne Cup, to be run at Flemington on the first Tuesday in November.

Half Yours becomes the 112th G1-winning Inglis graduate since 2018.

“It’s Incredible how far he’s come as a horse,’’ winning co-trainer Tony McEvoy said.

“You can’t do a thing like that with every horse, he’s a special horse and he’s just thrived on the preparation and he’s got bigger and stronger and better.

“The way he came into the mounting yard today he looked like he’d arrived as a stayer and then he went and did that so it’s very exciting.

“It means so much. We work bloody hard in this game and it’s great when it comes off like this.’’

An emotional Calvin McEvoy added: “I don’t know what to say. Dad has supported me and given me an opportunity in this great game.

“The race, we got further back than what we thought we would…but he’s a great horse and good horses do great things so I couldn’t be happier.’’

The next opportunity to purchase a horse like Half Yours on Inglis Digital comes this week with the October (Late) Sale, for which the catalogue is now live on inglisdigital.com and closes for bidding from 10am Wednesday.

Earlier on today’s Caulfield program Autumn Mystery (The Autumn Sun) surged into a $7 second favourite with Ladbrokes for the G1 Victoria Derby following a strong victory in the G3 Caulfield Classic.

It was a second consecutive win for Autumn Mystery, whose owner Nick Thompson and his wife Belinda bought at last year’s Premier Yearling Sale for just $15,000 from the draft of his breeder Gilgai Farm.

Trainer Rory Hunter described today’s result as “a boyhood dream’’.

“These moments don’t come along very often. It’s just amazing,’’ Hunter said.

“I was sweating there for a minute but once he saw daylight I was pretty positive he was going to get the win and he did.’’

The Victoria Derby will be run at Flemington on Saturday November 1.

Meanwhile on Everest Day at Randwick today Warwick Farm trainer Matthew Smith found himself considering a tilt at the $10m Golden Eagle with his progressive mare Idle Flyer (Dundeel) following her impressive win in the G3 Angst Stakes.

Idle Flyer has now won six of her 11 career starts – including three of four this preparation – prompting Smith to weigh up all options for the 4YO in both Sydney and Melbourne in coming weeks.

“That was her grand final today but there’s a couple of big races here and in Melbourne the next few weeks…but yes, for $10m the Golden Eagle has to be in our thoughts,’’ the trainer said.

“It’s a once in a career opportunity for these 4YOs and she’s progressive, she keeps improving every run.’’

Smith teamed up with Brett Howard’s Randwick Bloodstock Agency to purchase Idle Flyer for $70,000 at the Classic Yearling Sale, from the draft of her breeder Torryburn Stud.

And in New Zealand untapped filly Well Written (Written Tycoon) kept her unbeaten record intact with an impressive victory in the G2 Soliloquy Stakes at Ellerslie.

The filly has now raced twice for two outstanding victories and looks to be one of the most talented young horses coming through the ranks in New Zealand.

Benji King’s Foxhill Thoroughbreds bought Well Written for $32,500 as a weanling at the Great Southern Sale from the Lemrac Lodge draft, who offered her on behalf of her breeder David Digney.

Today’s successes cap off a huge week for Inglis, whose Ready2Race Sale on Thursday posted record results.

With a number of private sales having been completed since the last lot passed through the ring, the gross has now risen to a record $19,859,000, while the clearance rate is now an impressive 79%.
