Inglis graduates made an audacious run at spring riches snaring six black type races between Sydney and Melbourne on Saturday, following success in Hong Kong’s first stakes race of the new season on Wednesday. All the respective winners have eyes on Group 1 events in the coming months.
Three-year-old colts Brazen Beau and Hampton Court saluted at Randwick. Fontein Ruby, Chautauqua, Magicool and Under The Louvre all won at Flemington, while Bundle Of Love was the earlier victor at Sha Tin.
Brazen Beau (I Am Invincible x Sansadee) led home an Inglis trifecta in the Group 2 ATC Roman Consul Stakes over 1200m at Randwick on Saturday, defeating Nostradamus and Delectation.
Ontrack Racing’s exciting colt was one of the star two-year-olds of the Brisbane Winter Carnival and second up today after a look down the Flemington straight last start Brazen Beau showed his tremendous turn of foot that has him held in the highest regard by trainer Chris Waller.
“The first time up the straight he got a bit lost and he has improved with that run. It was good to see him bounce back today, he is a very good colt,” said Waller.
Bred by Bernie Howlett of Berant Park ACT, Brazen Beau was a $70,000 purchase by syndicators Ontrack Thoroughbreds from the draft of Murrulla Stud on behalf of at the 2013 Inglis Sydney Classic Yearling Sale Summer Book.
The best performed son of champion first season sire I Am Invincible has earned over $410,000 thanks to three wins and two placings from his seven career starts. The colt is now being aimed at the Group 1 VRC Coolmore Stud Stakes.
Hampton Court (Redoute's Choice x Roses 'n' Wine) will back-up next weekend in the Group 1 ATC Spring Champion Stakes following a gutsy victory under Joao Moreira in the Listed ATC Dulcify Stakes over 1600m at Randwick.
“He is a big strong horse who will keep getting better as we step him up in distance. He did a great job today, both of them did to run the quinella and he deserves his chance in the Spring Champion,” said trainer Gai Waterhouse.
Hampton Court was a $500,000 purchase by agent John Warren from the draft of Milburn Creek at the 2013 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale. The three-year-old colt is raced by Milburn Creek Thoroughbred Stud (Mgr: J L Muir), P E Mason, Manoc Developments Pty Limited (Mgr: J D Packer), Estate of the Late P J Ramsay, Belford Productions Pty Ltd (Mgr: A B Jones), Mrs K J Shadbolt, P C Shadbolt & Mrs C A Mason
Fontein Ruby (Turffontein x Charming Ruby) held off the fasting finishing Maastricht and Crafty to take out the Group 2 VRC Edward Manifold Stakes for three-year-old fillies over 1600m at Flemington.
Trainer Robert Smerdon indicated that Fontein Ruby could get her chance at Group 1 glory as early as next week, saying “there's a good chance she will back-up next week in the Thousand Guineas. She's in the race and she is the sort of filly with the right constitution to be able to do it.”
From the first crop of Blue Gum Farm’s stallion Turffontein, Fontein Ruby was purchased by Aquanita Racing from the Blue Gum draft at the 2013 Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale.
Chautauqua (Encosta De Lago x Lovely Jubly) continued on his winning way blitzing the field in the Group 2 VRC Gilgai Stakes over the straight 1200m at Flemington.
The Impressive sprinter was a handful for his connections as a three-year-old including badly missing the start and flashing home for fifth when favourite in the Inglis Guineas in May. But Hawkes Racing seem to have found the key to Chautauqua with two wins from two starts as a four-year-old.
“His win today was a lot better than the other day. He just ambled up to them before the clock tower. A lot of those horses were under pressure and I had not released him. There are some very nice races ahead of him,” said jockey Dwayne Dunn.
Bred by David and Edwina Throsby, Chautauqua failed to reach his $400,000 reserve when offered by Berkeley Park Stud at the 2012 Inglis Inglis Australian Easter Yearling. In nine starts Chautauqua has won four and finished second three times for his large group of owners: R & C Legh Racing (Mgrs: R & Mrs C Legh), G P I Racing (Mgr: G Ingham), Gurners Bloodstock (Mgr: M A Ramsden), G Pulitano, S W Kay, Ms M A Keating, Wright Racing (Mgrs: P & R Wright) & Ms E R S Throsby.
Chautauqua will now be aimed up at many of the spring’s major sprints including the Group 1 VRC Sprint Classic.
Magicool (Fastnet Rock x Perfect Truth) stamped himself as a horse to follow in the three-year-old staying races this spring with a tough win in the Listed VRC UCI Stakes over 1800m at Flemington.
The royally bred three-year-colt will no doubt be out to match the deeds of fellow Inglis graduate Polanski, which won the UCI Stakes, Norman Robison and Victoria Derby triple last year. The middle leg has been renamed the Caulfield Classic this year and raised to $750,000, music to the ears of trainer Mark Kavanagh.
“He has to be considered a genuine Derby horse - there's a lot of upside to this horse. The Caulfield Classic is now in the right place - two weeks after today and then two weeks to the Derby and that's the way he'll go," Kavanagh said.
By Australian champion sire Fastnet Rock from a stakes winning daughter of Galileo, Magicool was purchased by Mark Kavanagh Racing for $250,000 from the draft of Coolmore Stud at the 2013 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.
Under The Louvre (Excellent Art x Barcelona Girl) made it six stakes wins in Sydney and Melbourne on Saturday when he won the last race, the Listed VRC Headquarters Tavern Stakes over 1400m at Flemington.
Bred by Mrs DM Cobcroft, Under The Louvre was a $50,000 purchase by Aquanita Racing from the draft of Kanangra at the 2012 Inglis Sydney Classic Yearling Sale.
Today’s victory was the seventh win from 15 starts for the Robert Smerdon trained horse, taking his prizemoney to $315,000.
Bundle Of Love (Magic Albert x Lady Starstruck) announced his arrival at black type level with a strong victory over a quality field in Hong Kong’s first Group race of the new season, the HK-Group 3 National Day Cup, over 1000m at Sha Tin on Wednesday 1 October.
Trainer David Hall was very pleased with the result saying “the horse has been in outstanding form and it’s probably as good as I’ve ever had him, so I knew he was going to run well. Against one of the world’s best sprinters at the distance [Amber Sky] it’s hard to get too confident, but I was very confident the horse was in terrific order. Bundle Of Joy is going to step into the big league now,”
Bundle Of Joy was a $36,000 purchase by renowned agent John Foote from the draft of Middlebrook Station at the 2011 Inglis HTBA Scone Yearling Sale. The son of Magic Albert has won HK$6,200,000 (=A$900,000) in prizemoney thanks to six wins and seven placings from 16 starts in Hong Kong for his owners Mr & Mrs Colin Lo Chor Cheong.
