Inglis Juveniles Lead The Charge

Two two-year-old Inglis graduates, Pasadena Girl and Headwater, and three-year-old graduate Wandjina, saluted in fine form today at Flemington and Rosehill earning some well-deserved Black Type.

Pasadena Girl (NZ) (Savabeel x Nina From Pasadena), a $25,000 purchase from the 2014 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale blitzed the field in the Listed Talindert Stakes today on debut at Flemington. Sold from the draft of Eliza Park, the Peter Moody-trained two-year-old earned her connections in excess of $70,000 and herself some enviable Black Type in the first race of the day.

After trialing strongly earlier in the month, trainer Peter Moody was confident going into the race despite facing wide odds.

"The last thing I said to Vlad when I legged him up was that I think this is a real good filly," said Moody.

"She's done everything above what she should be doing at this point in her career. She's an immature Savabeel filly but she's always shown a tad of brilliance at home. I've been taken with her from day one." Moody said.

The full sister to Pasadena Girl is offered by Blandford Lodge as Lot 408 at the 2015 edition of the Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale.

The second two-year-old race for the day, the Group 2 ATC Silver Slipper Stakes at Rosehill was won by the impeccably bred Headwater (Exceed And Excel x River Dove).

Bred and sold by Cressfield Stud, the $500,000 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale purchase is now favourite for next month’s Group 1 ATC Golden Slipper. Headwater today made it two from two for Vinery Stud and Hawkes Racing, the same combination who raced All Too Hard.

Team Hawkes will be hoping to replicate last year’s success with fellow Inglis Easter graduate Mossfun who won the Silver and Golden Slipper double, and jockey Blake Shinn is confident that Headwater is in the best position going into the richest two-year-old race of the year.

“He’s very good, obviously it’s my first sit on him and you can’t just walk away with a smile, but it’s very exciting, especially to get a ride for the Hawkes stable heading into the (Golden) Slipper. They know what it takes,” said Shinn.

“He was the ultimate professional. He jumped, he went forward, he settled beautifully and he was in control the whole way. I waited until he was well balanced and I gave him a little squeeze and won with plenty of hand so it’s very exciting going forward.” Shinn said.

Wandjina (Snitzel x La Bamba) took his winnings to over $250,000 for owners Edmund and Belinda Bateman when he took out the Group 3 VRC CS Hayes Stakes at Flemington today. The Inglis Easter Yearling Sale graduate which was purchased by James Harron Bloodstock is in training with Gai Waterhouse and was ridden to victory today by Damien Oliver.

“I felt like we were going pretty leisurely through the first two thirds of the race so consequently he had a good kick for me,” said Oliver.

“He’s got a great constitution, I’ve had a lot to do with him this time in and he’s just been perfect from day one. He’s had a faultless preparation and he looks good going towards the Guineas.” Oliver said.

Bred and sold by Arrowfield Stud, Wanjina will contest the Group 1 VRC Australian Guineas at Flemington next month.

The half-brother to Wandjina by Manhattan Rain will be offered as Lot 8 at the 2015 edition of the Inglis Easter Yearling Sale from the draft of Arrowfield Stud.

The 2015 edition of the Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale will be held at Inglis’ Oaklands complex on 1, 2, 3 and 4 March. Parading will begin on Wednesday 25 February.
