The comeback party for Horse of the Year Typhoon Tracy was spoiled when rejuvenated galloper Whitefriars made it two Group 2 wins from as many starts in Melbourne in last night’s Australia Stakes.
WHITEFRIARS ($80,000 2007 Classic, 5g Arena-Alsatia) won the Group 2 Salinger Stakes at Flemington last spring and relished his return to the southern capital when getting the better of UNDENIABLY ($360,000 2008 Easter, 4g Fastnet Rock-Suggestive) in the closing stages.
Heavily backed favourite Typhoon Tracy ran on solidly at the end to finish third, within a length of the winner.
Whitefriars has been a revelation for trainer Rick Worthington over the past six months, finally living up to the promise he showed as an early three-year-old.
The Lomar Park Stud graduate is now the winner of six races for earnings topping $600,000. He is expected to be given his chance at Group 1 glory and a re-match with Typhoon Tracy in the Orr Stakes at his next outing.
A close relation to Whitefriars can be found in the upcoming Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale.
Lot 644 is a Churchill Downs filly from the draft of Little Plains Stud. The filly is from the Barathea mare Smooth As Silk, who is a half-sister to Whitefriars’ dam Alsatia.
The 2011 Melbourne Premier Sale will be held at Oaklands from February 28 to March 3.
Undeniably justified the confidence of trainer Mark Kavanagh in stepping him from a Ratings 78 race to this Group 2 feature when only going down in the shadows of the post.
Turangga Farm will offer a Redoute’s Choice three-quarter-brother to Undeniably at this year’s Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale as Lot 71. Undeniably’s dam Suggestive is the dam of six winners, headed by Group 1 winner Sky Cuddle and dual Group 3 winner Sky Love.
Easter also presents the opportunity to tap into the wonderful family of Typhoon Tracy, with fillies by Tale Of The Cat (Lot 142) and Dylan Thomas (Lot 281)
