Breaths were held at Morphettville on Saturday afternoon as Inglis graduates Kushadasi and Scratchy Bottom hit the line in the 2500m Group 1 SAJC South Australian Derby. After a few tense moments the locally trained Kushadasi was declared the victor by a nose, with fellow Inglis graduate Best Case half a length away in third.
Kushadasi (Choisir x Shanghai Moon) is the third straight Inglis graduate to win South Australia’s premier staying test for three-year-olds, following on from Escado (Inglis Premier) and Zabeelionaire (Inglis Easter) in 2013 and 2012 respectively.
Adelaide trainer Richard Jolly plucked Kushadasi out of Cornerstone Stud’s draft at the 2012 Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale for $100,000.
“It’s a big thrill,’’ said Jolly of his first Group 1 victory as a trainer.
The win takes Kushadasi’s earnings past $500,000 for five wins and three placings from 10 starts. The gelding is raced by N Morgan, Mrs K F Ackland, R G Ackland & J F Naffine.
From the stakes placed Carnegie mare Shanghai Moon, Kushadasi is the seventh Group 1 winner for his versatile sire Choisir.
In addition to the Derby, Inglis graduates won Two Guineas and Two two-year-old stakes races in Australia on Saturday thanks to Alpha Beat, Chautauqua, Cailin Miss and Pressing.
Pressing (Sebring x Lamiraqui) kept his unbeaten record intact coming from last to steam away with the Listed MRC Sky High Mt Dandenong Stakes over 1200m at Caulfield. The two-year-old will now be aimed higher towards the Group 1 BTC JJ Atkins in Brisbane on 7 June by trainer Mick Price.
The impressive colt was a $100,000 purchase by Blue Sky Bloodstock / M G Price Racing & Breeding Pty Ltd from from Widden Stud’s draft in Session II of the 2013 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.
Cailin Miss (Domesday x Partygoer) led home an all Inglis first four in the Listed SAJC Oaklands Plate over 1600m at Morphettville in Adelaide. Trainer Mick Price indicated he’d now aim the attractive filly towards the 2500m Group 1 VRC Crown Oaks back in Melbourne during the spring.
“She’s a big, rangy horse that’s got a beautiful set of lungs on her and second up over 1600m as a two-year-old I think that tells you something about her speed. We’ll have to look at a race like that [Crown Oaks] with her now,” Price said.
Price said he purchased Cailin Miss “100% on type” for $32,000 when she was offered by Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm in Session II of the 2013 Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale.
Alpha Beat (Magnus x Silverbeat) broke through for his first victory at stakes level when taking out the Listed SAJC Adelaide Guineas over 1600m at Morphettville. The three-year-old gelding came with a late florish to overpower Lady Lakshmi right on the line.
The son of Magnus was offered by Eliza Park on behalf of breeder Robert Crabtree at the 2012 Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale. Anthony Cummings purchased Alpha Beat for $120,000, but Crabtree loved the colt so stayed in to race the youngster with Cummings, C D Jamieson and Ms S C Morvan.
Chautauqua (Encosta De Lago x Lovely Jubly) continued the outstanding run for Hawkes Racing with Inglis graduates when winning the Group 3 Hawkesbury Guineas over 1400m. The well-bred three-year-old put himself in the picture for the $400,000 Inglis Guineas at Scone in two weeks with the strong stakes win.
John, Michael and Wayne Hawkes are having a great season with stakes winning Inglis graduates such as Mossfun, Gold Force, Not Listenin'tome, Ninth Legion and now Chautaugua.
