Johnson Family To Disperse at Inglis Weanling & Breeding Stock Sale

The Johnson Family unreserved dispersal at the Inglis Australian Weanling & Breeding Stock Sale to be held in Sydney over the three days of June 25, 26 and 28 offers a rare opportunity to purchase from a highly commercial broodmare band which has been built up by the late Mr Stan Johnson and his son Bruce over the last 15 years.

Headlining the draft of mares to be offered is the 2003 Golden Slipper winner Polar Success (pictured) in foal to Bernardini (USA). Already the dam of the stakes placed Polaway, Polar Success had a Zabeel filly make $300,000 to the bid of Danny O’Brien at this month’s Easter Yearling Sale. Also bound to draw plenty of attention is the Group 2, MRC Schillaci Stakes winner Segments who carries a positive test to Bernardini (USA).

Twin Palms have often sourced outstanding bloodlines overseas and several imported mares will grace the catalogue in June. Former champion 3 year old filly of South Africa, Mythical Play will be offered in foal to Aussie Rules, along with the Group 2 winning English bred mare Dancing (GB), in foal to Nadeem. Other stakes performed or stakes producing mares include Mica’s Pride (STC Research Stakes Group 3) and Ain’t She A Daisy (dam of Ain’t Here, HKJC Hong Kong Derby Group 1). Covering stallions include More Than Ready (USA), Testa Rossa, Exceed And Excel and Encosta De Lago.

11 weanlings will be sold as part of the dispersal sale with some outstanding opportunities on offer. A Redoute’s Choice half sister to Hong Kong Derby winner Ain’t Here is certain to be highly sought after as will be the Redoute’s Choice colt from Group 2 winner Dancing (GB).

Twin Palms bred the top classic racehorse and leading 1st crop sire Charge Forward. They will offer a colt by him from a beautifully bred young American mare Astinella (USA).

Other sires represented in the dispersal include Snitzel, Mossman and Nadeem. The dispersal will also contain 4 regally bred race fillies including a 2 year old filly by Redoute’s Choice from the Group 3 winner Mica’s Pride.

The decision by the Johnsons to disperse at The Australian Weanling & Breeding Stock Sale follows the outstanding success enjoyed by Tyreel Stud’s dispersal at this sale last year, which was highlighted by the record-breaking $5million paid for the Danehill mare Milanova.

Sue Suduk also chose to disperse at this sale last year, with three of her mares – led by $2 million for Lucida – topping the million dollar mark.

“Obviously there were some highlight lots that caught all of the headlines last year, but the most pleasing aspect of this sale last year was the solid trade across all three days,” Inglis Managing Director Mark Webster said.

“In all, almost $30 million was traded at this sale last year, proving it is ideally placed for both vendors and buyers immediately preceding the start of the new breeding season.

“Despite the market having softened this year, results from last week’s broodmare sale show that young quality race fillies and mares and good producers are still very much sought after commodities at the moment and are hard to buy. Well bred and well conformed weanlings should also achieve good results in late June with pinhookers still keen to invest in quality stock.”

Vendors who have tested the market already through Inglis sales this year are reminded of the incentives on offer.

The Family Incentive - Any Broodmare that was sold at the Australian Easter Broodmare Sale is eligible to have her weanling sold at the Australian Weanling & Breeding Stock Sale entry free.

Rollover Incentive - Free entry for any mare should if she was withdrawn or passed in from the select session of the Australian Easter Broodmare Sale.

The New Sire Showcase will again be a feature of the sale, whereby progeny of sires whose oldest offspring are weanlings in 2009 will be highlighted, with selected lots showcased on TVN, the evening prior to the sale.

“This concept drew a lot of attention to the weanling market with many subsequent inspections taking place the following morning after buyers had seen weanlings not previously on their lists.” added Webster.

Nominations for this sale, which include both Weanling and Breeding Stock sections, close on Friday May 1.
