SUSHISAN

Breeding: 3yo Chestnut gelding by Fuji Kiseki (JPN) x Meine Tochter, by Bataan
Vendor: Kitchwin Hills
Owner: Velty Towers Racing
Trainer: H. Brown Jnr

Having only faced the starter on six occasions, Fuji Kiseki (JPN) gelding Sushisan is a galloper who clearly possesses above average ability, earning him the honours of Horse of The Month for July.

Racing in South Africa, under the care of Herman Brown Jnr, the chestnut gelding dominated his opposition in 3 of his first 4 starts by an average winning margin of 3.5 lengths prompting connections to target more lucrative assignments.

The decision to step Sushisan up to the elite level was immediately vindicated when he finished a pleasing 3rd in the Grade 1 Clairwood Park Gold Challenge (1600m). At his next outing he turned in a gallant effort to be beaten just over a length in the Grade 1 Vodacom Durban July, despite 3 weeks between runs and jumping to the 2200m journey. In the process he finished ahead of the winners of 9 individual Grade 1 events and brought to a close an initial campaign that spanned 6 race starts in 6 months.

The story of this highly talented galloper began as an unborn foal at the 2002 Easter Broodmare Sale, when Kitchwin Hills purchased his dam Meine Tochter with a positive test to Fuji Kiseki (JPN). Some years earlier, Michael Malone, Stud Manager of Kitchwin Hills had worked with Meine Tochter, and knew what excellent types she produced, so when the opportunity presented itself to purchase the mare, he jumped at it.

A year later it was decided to offer him at the 2003 Australian Select Weanling Sale where he was sold for $25,000 to the bid of Mr Herman Brown and Mr Ian Veltman of South Africa. “He was as nice a weanling as you’d see, a cracker of a foal, forward and very correct”, stated Malone.

Once exported to South Africa, he was offered through the National Yearling Sale in Johannesburg, where R180,000 was exchanged at the fall of the hammer.

Future plans for Sushisan include Dubai, where he will be readied for the 2007 Dubai International Carnival, with his ultimate aim being the US$5 million Group 1 Dubai Duty Free on turf over 1750m. Based on his form to date and with natural improvement, Sushisan looks set to make his presence felt on a global stage.
