Black-type racing for two-year-olds during the 2012/13 Australian racing season got off to a flying start over the weekend, with the very first stakes event going the way of speedy filly Brilliant Bisc.
An astute purchase by Turangga Farm’s Stuart Ramsey Brilliant Bisc ($11,000 2011 Weanling, 2f Elvstroem-Stella Cadente) jumped straight to the front in the Listed Gimcrack Stakes over the Randwick 1000m on Saturday and was never headed.
“It’s always good to win a race anywhere, but a Gimcrack is very special,” Ramsey told TVN after the win.
Bred by Wood Nook Farm in Victoria, Brilliant Bisc (pictured) is by Blue Gum Farm’s resident stallion Elvstroem from Group 1 MVRC Australia Stakes winner Stella Cadente.
The well bred filly held a one length margin at the finish of Australia’s first two-year-old stakes race for 2012/13 over Guelph and Shahad, which are also from Group 1 winning mares.
Second placegetter Guelph is from G1 ATC Sires Produce winner Camarilla, which was a $900,000 Easter yearling purchase by Woodlands Stud from the draft of Darley. Evidently Darley regained Camarilla when they purchased Woodlands and all its stock in 2008.
Rounding out the trifecta of juveniles from Group 1 winners was Shahad, which is from Emirates Park’s triple Group 1 winner Shamekha.
The Gimcrack winner, Brilliant Bisc, was sold by Amarina Farm to Ramsey Pastoral for $11,000 at the 2011 Inglis Australian Weanling and Bloodstock Sale.
“I was sitting home in Casino one night and was looking through an Inglis catalogue and I liked the pedigree so I called Ian Macpherson and he bought her for us the next day,” Ramsey recollected.
The filly was then sent to Peter Moody, who trained Group 1 winning mares Cinque Cento and Sky Cuddle for Ramsey.
Brilliant Bisc’s name now sits on the honour roll of the Gimcrack Stakes alongside top fillies such as Furious and Australian Racing Hall Of Fame inductee Wenona Girl.
Saturday’s winner was her sire Elvstroem’s eighth stakes winner. The globe-trotting son of Danehill is set to have another good showing at Inglis select sales in 2013, including the Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale on March 4 to 7.
