Kaiser claims bonus with two-year-old win

Singapore Turf Club - Craig Brennan - Sunday, 6 February 2011

Trainer Theo Kieser could not have asked for a better way to open his winning account for season 2011 when Kaiser took out the $75,000 Inglis Melbourne Juvenile Stakes over 1000m on the Polytrack on Sunday.

And the gelding picked up a $25,000 bonus for connections with his victory.

The bonus was on offer for any horse sired in Australia and sold through one of the Australian sales companies – namely Inglis or Magic Millions and the race forms part of the Singapore Golden Horseshoe Series.

Kaiser was originally sold for A$11,000 at the 2010 Inglis Sydney Classic Yearling Sale before being picked up by the Gryphon Stable for A$80,000 at the National Horses In Training Sale last October.

Displaying tractability, Kaiser, ridden by Soo Khoon Beng, raced on the outside of the leader Beyonce (Vlad Duric) in the early stages of the race before taking the lead on the hometurn.

After looking likely to be challenged by the favourite Totality (Joao Moreira) with 200m to run, Kaiser responded to Soo’s urging to record a one-and-a-half length victory over Totality with Dash For Win (Danny Beasley) two-and-three-quarter lengths away third.

The race was the first two-year-old event for the season and is one of a seven race series that culminates with the running on the Group 2 Aushorse Golden Horseshoe over 1200m on May 20.

Kaiser is one of six two-year-olds that Kieser has in training and the trainer said he specifically targeted the opening two-year-old race of the year.

“I knew there wouldn’t be a lot of entries for the race and that there was also a $25,000 bonus up for grabs as well and this horse was Australian-bred and purchased at one of the Australian sales,” said Kieser.

“All my two-year-olds have come out of Australia and are all here now so we’ll see how they come up for some of the other races in the series.

“I went to the Ready To Run Sale with the intention of finding something especially for this race and we have come out of it with happy results.”

Kieser said he had some concerns after the gelding’s last piece of work that he may have needed the run prior to Sunday’s race.

“It was a bit rushed to have him ready in time after I purchased him,” said Kieser.

“I was worried that he might have been one trial short and he was blowing quite a bit after the race.

“KB gave him a jumpout from the barriers during the week and also thought he might have been a bit underdone.

“I have no doubt that this run will bring him on quite a bit.”

Kaiser is a son of Seidnazar from the Perugino mare One Wink and is owned by the Gryphon Stable which also owns Kaiser’s stablemate Delta Wing (Barend Vorster) which finished at the tail of the six horse field.

Favourite punters who punted Totality down to an $8 chance, were in trouble soon after the start when the gelding was the slowest to begin and then had to be hard ridden to go forward, settling down in fourth position but off the track.

Making the hometurn the widest, Totality tried gallantly and looked a winning chance with 200m to run, but the effort to overcome a slow start told and Kaiser was able to hold him comfortably to the line.
