The Kinky Boom (Spirit Of Boom x Kinka Rhode) story has so many amazing angles it’s hard to know where to start.
But one thing is for sure – connections are in for one hell of a ride with their new Blue Diamond second-favourite following her debut victory in today’s $250,000 Inglis Premier at Caulfield.
For breeders Eureka Stud, the win was the result of a $600 broodmare purchase in Kinka Rhode from the 2014 Scone Sale whom they soon sent to their on-fire First Season Sire Spirit Of Boom, for which Kinky Boom was the resulting filly.
Today was also Spirit Of Boom’s first runner in Victoria, which netted him another Stakes winner – his fourth from just 22 overall runners which has included nine victors.
For vendors Damian Gleeson and Deb Gifford of Phoenix Broodmare Farm, a self-confessed “couple of battler, this type of thing just doesn’t happen’’.
And for the big group of owners, many of which are first-timers into racing, it’s the start of a journey that could very realistically take them to the top in the blink of an eye.
Eureka Stud’s Scott McAlpine said he couldn’t remember too many victories that were as special to him as today’s.
“It really is a win for the families, the McAlpine’s, the McEvoy’s and the Inglis family, many of which make up a good part of the ownership and obviously training team of this filly,’’ McAlpine said.
“Spirit Of Boom is going so well, it really is hard to get your head around what he’s achieved so far and this filly Kinky Boom, she was always a very intelligent filly, a very athletic filly and while she was never huge as a young horse, she’s developed into an outstanding type.’’
Gleeson and Gifford retained a 10% share of Kinky Boom after last year’s Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale, something they rarely do.
“But we just knew she was special, we knew she had an X-Factor of some description,’’ Gleeson said.
“This is awesome, just awesome. To share this moment and this hopefully long ride with such great people really makes it all worthwhile.’’
Kinky Boom was a $40,000 buy for her trainer Tony McEvoy from Phoenix Broodmare Farm at last year’s Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale.
She had now won a barrier trial by 8.5 lengths, her sole career start eased down by more than a length and is an $8 TAB second-favourite for the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes at Caulfield on February 24.
