One week the Victoria Derby the next the Hong Kong Jockey Club Maribyrnong Plate, that’s how the VRC spring carnival has rolled for Robbie Laing.
On the opening day of the carnival Laing won the Derby with Polanksi, a bargain-basement $4,000 yearling.
Today he took out the feature juvenile race - $150,000 Maribyrnong Plate with Boomwaa, which cost $40,000.
In fact, Laing has made the Maribyrnong Plate his own in recent years. Last year he won the race with Direct Charge and two years ago he finished second, beaten a head, with Andre Roo Hoo.
Laing plans to set Boomwaa for the $250,000 Inglis Classic at Randwick on January 18.
“I saw this horse from a distance at the Classic Sale. I didn’t even know what he as by, but he looked a great type,” Laing said.
“I followed him to his box. I found out he is a half to Boom Time Savings, which ran fourth behind Miss Finland in the Golden Slipper.
“I think he will be best suited over 1400 or a mile, he covers a lot of ground.”
Boomwaa, ridden by Vlad Duric, was supported from $7 to $6.50 and those that backed him were always on good terms with themselves.
The gelding coasted to a three-length win from Lockroy, $5.50, with Silent Whisper, backed from $5 to $4.60, to finish a long head away in third.
