Leading Stakes Winning Breeders For 2011/12

With the last black type races in Australia for the 2011/12 racing season run and won over the weekend, Arrowfield have finished as the leading breeder of stakes winners sold at Inglis Sales.

“The 111 individual Inglis stakes winners across Australia in the last twelve months were bred by a wide range of studs, individuals, companies, groups and syndicates who all set out more than four years ago to send their mare to a stallion in order to breed a stakes winner, and I congratulate them on their success in doing so,” said Inglis Managing Director Mark Webster.

Arrowfield, solely and in partnership with clients, bred eight individual stakes winners of 10 black type races in Australia over the past twelve months that were graduates of Inglis sales. The group were Flying Snitzel, Hot Snitzel, Snitzerland, Bermaise, Colorado Claire, Rose Of Peace, Sabrage and Group 1 winner Master Of Design (pictured on 2009 Easter Preview Cover), which will stand at Swettenham Stud in his debut season this year.

Swettenham Stud had the honour of offering Black Caviar in their 2008 Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale draft on behalf of breeder Rick Jamieson, whose Gilgai Farm was also responsible for breeding exciting juvenile Group 2 winner All Too Hard from the same mare.

All Too Hard topped the 2011 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale when sold from the draft of Makybe Stud, as agent for Gilgai Farm, and Makybe also bred two Inglis graduates that won at stakes level in Australia in 2011/12; Specter and Wales.

Coolmore Stud clients also had great success as breeders of stakes winners, headlined by Group 1 winners Niwot and Invest, which were sold under the Coolmore banner at the prestigious Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.

The progeny of Coolmore’s Australian Champion Sire elect Fastnet Rock also feature heavily in the list, led by Bylong Park Stud bred four-time Group 1 winning filly Mosheen and Luskin Park Stud bred colt Foxwedge. Achieving a Timeform rating of 128, higher than his sire and Redoute’s Choice, Foxwedge is set to cover a stellar book of mares at Henry Field’s Newgate Farm in his debut season at stud in the coming months.

A graduate of Inglis Easter himself, the progeny of Fastnet Rock were the hot ticket item at this year’s Australian Easter and Melbourne Premier Yearling Sales, with 65 of the stallion’s top bred and conformed youngsters snapped up by buyers from across the globe at the two leading sales.

In addition to Mosheen, Bylong Park Thoroughbreds were also cheering after the Group 3 success of Psychologist in February having bred the daughter of Choisir.

New Zealand breeders and/or vendors who sold with Inglis also had strong results on Australian tracks, with Rich Hill Thoroughbreds, Esker Lodge, Little Avondale Stud & Trelawney Stud all recording stakes winners, while Metal Bender and Strike The Stars flew the flag proudly for the Chittick’s Waikato Stud.

Highlighting how varied the bloodlines and type of young horse that is presented at Inglis’ sales the 111 stakes winners were by 66 different sires, won from 1000m to 3200m, include two-year-olds through to eight-year-olds and were victorious in a wide range of conditions across each state in Australia.

“From Ortensia’s breeder Len Rhodes in Corowa to the Gorham’s of Warroo who bred Sincero to Cox Plate winner Pinker Pinker’s breeders William Giovas & C Gordon from Ivanhoe East, the Australian breeding industry encompasses many people and Inglis is very grateful to be part of such a vibrant and diverse industry,” Webster said.
