The ‘cosmopolitan' nature of the March Thoroughbred Sale was clearly evident at Oaklands Junction today with weanlings, yearlings, untried stock, colts & geldings and fillies & mares all up for grabs.
Trading too, was brisk for the choice lots, particularly among the proven racehorses.
By the final hammer fall, 313 lots had had been knocked down in the Inglis sale ring during the two day auction, realising a gross of $1,660,000 and average of $5,303.
“The March Sale complements our Great Southern Sale in June in that it offers vendors the opportunity to disperse their bloodstock at a well-known and highly-publicised venue,” Inglis Director Peter Heagney summarised. “And it was proven, once more, that quality will attract the buyers as was the case yesterday when Octagonal mare Sienna sold for $70,000 and again today with the $80,000 for Legal Thrills.
“Indeed, this was one of the strongest ‘racehorse' sales seen in Victoria for quite some time and competition was spirited on most lots. That's fairly indicative from a remarkable clearance of 92% and vendors should be applauded for their willingness to meet the market and boost buyer confidence.”
The Lindsay Park-consigned Legal Thrills (Lot 242) is an unraced 3YO daughter of Indian Danehill from the multiple Group winning mare Soleil Rouge and offers much on the track and off it. The family is rich with black type and and the mare is closely related to current 2YO, Crossyourheart, a multiple stakeswinner in New Zealand. Sparking interest throughout the auditorium, Legal Thrills was eventually knocked down for $80,000 to Sean Buckley's Ultra Thoroughbreds. Obviously on the look out for the next Miss Andretti!
And, while Legal Thrills headed up the female section, it was speedy stakeswinner What's The Mail who topped the boys, eventually being knocked down to Bill Pallot for $38,000. Hopefully the 5YO will add to his illustrious record which includes a 1100m stakes win at Caulfield and a nose second to Bomber Bill in the Group Three MRC Rubiton Stakes at successive starts.
The show now moves to the Sydney for the ‘greatest show on turf'. The Australian Easter Yearling Sale commences on Tuesday 10 April, followed by the 6-day Australian Weanling & Broodmare Sale from Sunday 15 April.
