Robbie Laing told apprentice Jackie Beriman to ride Lonhruge in the There’s No Better Bet Than A Sportingbet Handicap as if it was a track gallop.
Laing’s confidence proved justified as Lonhruge (pictured as yearling) continued her love affair with Sportingbet Park to bring up her fourth win at the track.
Lonhruge, the $3.60 favourite, was untroubled to win by three-quarters of a length from a gallant First Course, $8.50 , with a neck to the fast-finishing The Jazz Singer, $5, third.
Laing said the filly did a good job taking on the older, more seasoned horses.
“They have to be pretty smart to beat the older horses even if it was in restricted grade,” Laing said.
“They have all the street smarts about them, but she has done a good job.”
Laing noted that up until a couple of months ago Lonhruge was a “frail, lightly framed filly” who had “turned the corner”.
Beriman said Lonhruge travelled beautifully throughout and she responded when asked.
“Robbie was super confident before the race. He said ‘just treat it like a track gallop, she is just going to win’,” Beriman said.
Lonhruge (3f Lonhro x Refuge) was a $90,000 purchase by Robbie Laing from the draft of Rosemont Stud at the 2011 Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale.
Wednesday's victory took Lonhruge's record to 13 starts for four wins and one placing, with prizemoney earnings of $105,745.
