Mabsam breaks drought

Racing Network - Carl Di Iorio - Saturday, 15 December 2012

Mabsam (pictured as yearling) had to wait a while before she notched her second win. An impressive two length winner on debut in August 2011 at Geelong Synthetic, her victory at Flemington on Saturday was her first win since – 13 starts later.

Mabsam finished over the top of Secret Liaison to win the $80,000 Aktrapid Nursing Agency Handicap (1620m) for fillies and mares by three quarters of a length.

The four-year-old mare was ridden patiently at the rear of the field by 1½ kilo claiming apprentice Chad Schofield for his master David Hayes by sweeping to victory.

“She has a bad habit of missing the start,” Schofield said.

Hayes said post-race he was not overly impressed by Schofield’s ride on the daughter of Stratum last time, when thirteenth in the listed Summoned Stakes (1500m) behind Cabernet.

“Chad (Schofield) missed the start on her last time but he made the mistake of creeping (up through the field) during the race and got himself into all sorts of trouble,” Hayes said.

“Today he rode to the rules, that being when you miss the start you sit quietly and pounce late.”

“What she needs now is a black type win so we might back off with her and look for something in the early autumn,” he added.

Mabsam was purchased for $240,000 from the 2010 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale by Shadwell Stud. She is a half-sister to Group 3 Eclipse Stakes (1800m) winner Viking Hero.
