Makybe Holds Court At Oaklands On Day 2

The much admired close relation to Makybe Diva stole the show with a winning $365,000 bid from Emerald Thoroughbreds on Day 2 of the Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale, as the clearance rate improved steadily from the opening session.

The colt by Redoute’s Choice from Makybe Diva’s half-sister Celtic Reign (Woodman) is also a three-quarter relation to this season’s Group 2 winner Musket and was offered for sale by Tony Santic’s Makybe.

Today’s session comprised 220 lots and sold at a rate of 74 per cent, bringing the sale total to 71 per cent, with two sessions remaining. 154 yearlings sold today for a gross of $8,665,500, bringing the sale total to 276 sold for $15,569,000 at an average of $56,409. The median remains steady at $50,000.

“It is still very much a buyers’ market, but we would obviously like to see that clearance rate climb further as the sale continues,” Inglis Director Peter Heagney said.

“The steady completion of private sales is also encouraging for vendors who have not sold in the ring.”

Despite buyers having the opportunity to be more selective with their purchases, competition on the top lots remains strong, with 40 horses now having topped the $100,000 mark during the first two sessions.

Fresh from a Group 1 win with Apache Cat and Group 2 success for rising star Mic Mac in the past fortnight, Greg Eurell has been active during the first two sessions.

After securing Apache Cat’s Dubawi half-brother for $120,000 yesterday, Eurell made a successful $200,000 bid on Ultra Thoroughbreds’ Rock Of Gibraltar filly from the stakes placed Barathea mare Amah Dramas this morning.

That price was matched by the Hussonet-Brillanti colt from Mill Park’s draft, which was knocked down to Hong Kong interests.

All horses passed in during the first two sessions are still for sale via the Inglis Make an Offer service.

The sale continues from 11am tomorrow and can be viewed online at Inglis Sale Day Live
