Amongst the quality undercard for the Cox Plate is the third running of the newly renamed Inglis Banner, a $250,000 race over 1000m restricted to two year old's nominated to the Inglis Race Series.
The race which has attracted a field of eleven has been renamed this year in honour of its inaugural winner and multiple Group 1 winner Starspangledbanner, bred by Tony Santic and raised at his Makybe breeding operation in Gnarwarre, near Geelong.
To mark the occasion, Tony and Deslee Santic will join Inglis Managing Director Mark Webster to present the winning connections of The Banner but may well find themselves as the recipients as they will have Chi Chi in the race.
The Redoutes Choice filly is also a Makybe graduate and is now in the care of team Hawkes.
Breeders and owners will be following the result with much interest with the progeny of three first season sires contesting the event. Masthead (Written Tycoon), By The Hour (Strada) and Mirror Man (Man of Illusion) are all out to be the first winner for their sires.
John O’Shea and Clarry Conners have ventured south for the race with their fillies Elites Falls and By The Hour. The O’Shea trained Elite Falls is the only horse to have raced, finishing 5th in the Listed Gimcrack Stakes at Randwick on Epsom Day.
Four of the field of eleven are trial winners including Arctic Command, a half-brother to the quality Victorian Group 3 winning 2YO from last season, General Truce.
Sunday will cap off a big month for the Inglis Race Series, with the running of the $100,000 Inglis Trophy at Sale. For 3YOs over 1400m last year’s Trophy was won by the promising Lonhro colt Dissolved, a subsequent Stakes winner in the Autumn.
A runner of interest is the Mick Price trained debutant Donovan's, a graduate of the inaugural Australian Racehorse Sale in Melbourne last November. Donovan's is a half brother to stakeswinner Stokehouse, with both horses deriving their names from popular St Kilda restaurants.
