Manton Makes His Mark

Racing And Sports - Wednesday, 29 December 2010

Group winner Manton is the latest son of Danehill to become a winning sire.,

Manton, a $1.1 million yearling purchase by Ingham Bloodstock at the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, registered his first winner with his third runner when the Darley owned 2YO filly Graskop won at Sandown on Wednesday.

Manton , a half brother to G1 winner Blackfriars and Larrocha, won the G2 Tulloch Stakes before beginning his stud career for Darley.

However he lacked commercial appeal, covering books of only 43 outside mares and 11 in his first two seasons at stud before Darley passed him on to Tareena Stud at Taree on the NSW north coast where he stood last spring on a fee of $5500.

Graskop, trained by Peter Snowden, is a half-sister to stakes-placed Ankaret from the Snippets mare Rondavel.

Rondavel, a daughter of Group winner Lusso, has now produced five winners.

Rondavel was sold by Darley for $40,000 at the 2010 Inglis Broodmare Sale in foal to Exceed And Excel and has since produced a colt foal.

Manton's first starter Disputes was stakes-placegetter on debut in the Gimcrack Stakes at Randwick in October.

Another notable winner winner Darley on Wednesday was the 3YO filly Sables at Gosford.

Sables, by Elusive Quality is a out of Danehill's multiple G1 winner Magical Miss .

She cost $300,000 at the Inglis Easter Sale and is the third winner from three runners for VRC Oaks winner Magical Miss.

Magical Miss was sent to stud in 2003 when she was covered by Giant's Causeway but did not carry the full term.

The following year she went to Elusive Quality and from that mating came the David Hayes-trained winner Miss Evasive.

Her next foal was a Shamardal colt Whealey, sold at the Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale for $210,000 to Patinack Farm.

She then produced Sables and has since had a colt by Hussonet.

She was covered in August by More Than Ready.

Magical Miss is the only VRC Oaks winner by Danehill and is from the Spectacular Bid mare Hooked Bid.

She realised $520,000 when purchased by the Wyllie Group at the 2000 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.

In the spring of 2001 she won the G1 Thousand Guineas beating Golden Slipper winner Ha Ha before romping home in the VRC Oaks by five lengths.

At four she returned to win the G2 Memsie Stakes, beating Cox Plate winner Fields Of Omagh, G1 winner Dash For Cash and Horse of the Year Northerly.

She was subsequently beaten a half head in the G2 Feehan Stakes by Fields Of Omagh and a head by Northerly in the G1 Underwood Stakes.

Injury restricted her to only three more times over the next 12 months before she was retired.
