A resounding victory in the Group One SAJC South Australian Derby (2500m) has tipped the scales in favour of Lazer Sharp being awarded the William Inglis & Son Horse of the Month award for May.

A son of the dual Group Two winning speedster Zariz, Lazer Sharp’s pedigree is suggestive of a sprinter, but it was as a staying 3YO that his dominance appeared. Once getting to a journey over 2000m, it became evident to all concerned that the graduate of the 2005 William Inglis & Son Melbourne Spring Ready To Run Sale was going to come into his own.

A start in the Listed VRC St Leger (2500m) at Moonee Valley was where Lazer Sharp asserted authority beyond his connections belief. Last at the 600m mark, the highly talented stayer came with a burst of speed and stamina to score by six-lengths, going away.

Attracting offers from numerous international clients, Lazer Sharp had his next start in the time honoured Group One SAJC South Australian Derby at Morphettville. Sent out a solid favourite based on his previous win, the rangy bay came from well back to once again score, this time by 1.3 lengths.

Purchased by leading yearling buyer Shadwell Australia after his Derby triumph, Lazer Sharp will do his future racing under the tutelage of maestro David Hayes.

“What I found so attractive about him is that he has qualified for the Melbourne and Caulfield cups and there have been some very good form lines through those races (the St Leger and SA Derby) over the years into the cups,” said Hayes after the purchase.

William Inglis & Son would like to congratulate the previous connections of Lazer Sharp and wish his new owners the best of luck for his future racing career.
