Melbourne Autumn Yearling Sale is Less Than Two Weeks Away

The 2012 Inglis Melbourne Autumn Yearling Sale is less than two weeks away, with an additional 20 supplementary lots added to the burgeoning catalogue that now encompasses 451 yearlings.

Over 60% of the yearlings catalogued over the two day sale on Sunday April 29 and Monday April 30 are Super VOBIS and VOBIS Gold eligible, with Lots 1 to 215 to be offered on Day One followed by Lots 216 to 451 on Day Two.

Autumn is a great value sale having unearthed bargain priced gallopers such as G1 WATC Derby winner Grand Journey, recent Listed winner Backbone and G1 VRC Australian Guineas placegetter Mister Milton.

Grand Journey was purchased from Autumn for $6,500 before claiming Group One glory and $608,850 on the racetrack. The daughter of Good Journey is also producing great yearlings for the sale ring, with her first foal selling at Easter last year for $125,000 and this year’s offering, a filly by Bernardini, selling for $210,000 to David Redvers last week.

Three-year-old Mister Milton has collected $181,850 in earnings and a Group One placing so far since being plucked from Autumn for just $7,500.

Backbone is another Autumn graduate that looks to have a bright future. The three-year-old son of Mossman was picked out of Autumn for $34,000 and is now the winner of three of seven starts including Listed Mornington RC Galilee Final Handicap on April 8th.

“For a sale that averages less than $12,000 the Autumn Yearling Sale has produced some fantastic racetrack results for both our Australian and overseas based clients,” Inglis Melbourne Director Peter Heagney said.

“The extra prizemoney recently committed by the Victorian government plus the addition of VOBIS Gold make it extremely attractive to race a horse here in Victoria, with a Super VOBIS and VOBIS Gold eligible horse able to earn $41,650 for winning a midweek metropolitan race from next season,” Heagney said.

All yearlings offered at the 2012 Inglis Melbourne Autumn Yearling Sale are also eligible for nomination into the $5million Inglis Race Series, which includes the $100,000 Inglis Plate restricted to Melbourne Autumn Yearling Sale graduates.

This year’s $100,000 Inglis Autumn Plate for two-year-olds was won impressively by the Robbie Griffiths trained Edgewood (pictured), which had a three length margin over his rivals in the April 11 event. The son of Churchill Downs was one of the star lots at the 2011 Autumn Sale, with Griffiths having to go to $55,000 to secure the strapping colt.
