Miles To Call Record 35th Melbourne Cup

Greg Miles will celebrate a special milestone in his distinguished broadcasting career next Tuesday when he calls a record 35th Melbourne Cup.

The popular Melbourne-based race caller will surpass the record he currently shares with legendary race caller Bill Collins of 34 Melbourne Cups at just after 3pm on Tuesday 3 November.

Next best is Joe Brown with 33 Cup calls, Ken Howard with 32, and Bert Bryant with 28.

Despite being the voice of Australia's most famous race, Miles says there are other races he enjoys calling more.

"It's not something that you say `boy am I looking forward to that'," he said.

"It's just the ridiculous pressure of the Melbourne Cup. It's not an enjoyable experience."

Miles also admits to plenty of nerves before 'the race that stops a nation'.

"It's still the Melbourne Cup, it's still the biggest audience I have by far for just that one race and it means a lot to them, it means a lot to the industry and just people in general," he said.

"It's a big event that needs to be broadcast properly."

Miles nominated Makybe Diva's historic third victory in the 2005 Melbourne Cup as his most cherished call when he famously said "and a champion becomes a legend" as she passed the winning post.
